Step 1: Download the Microsoft Authenticator App to your phone

Step 2: Enrol in Multi-Factor Authentication

Western Sydney University highly recommends the use of the Microsoft Multifactor Authenticator App to register for MFA, as it is the simplest and most secure method.

Western has implemented multi-factor authentication for all students.
The implementation of Microsoft MFA is a proactive step to bolster the security of our digital infrastructure.

With the increasing number of cyber threats, MFA provides an additional layer of protection as it requires our users to authenticate their online identity through multiple methods.

This ensures a more secure online environment for everyone and provides:
Enhanced Security:
Your online accounts are more secure. With MFA, even if your password is compromised, unauthorised access is significantly reduced.
Personal Data Protection:
Your personal information is more protected. Multi-Factor Authentication adds an extra layer of security, ensuring that your data remains confidential.
Convenient Access:
Accessing your accounts becomes more convenient. Instead of relying solely on passwords, you'll have various authentication options, making it easier for you to log in securely.
Protecting Academic Records:
Your academic records are important. MFA ensures that only authorized individuals can access your grades, transcripts, and other sensitive academic information.
Preventing Unauthorised Access:
We're putting measures in place to prevent unauthorised individuals from accessing your accounts. MFA is like having a digital lock, and you hold the key.
Remote Learning Security:
In the age of remote learning, securing your accounts is crucial. MFA adds an extra layer of protection, whether you're accessing class materials or attending virtual lectures.
Seamless Technology Integration:
MFA seamlessly integrates with the technologies you already use. Whether it's your email, online courses, or collaborative platforms, the transition will be smooth.
Global Accessibility:
As you travel or access your accounts from different locations, MFA ensures that you are the only one who can log in, providing global accessibility without compromising security.
Preventing Account Hijacking:
Account hijacking is a real threat. With MFA, we're adding an extra layer of defence to prevent unauthorised individuals from taking control of your accounts.

MFA for Students - FAQs

What is Multifactor Authentication (MFA)?

MFA is a security feature that requires users to provide multiple forms of identification before accessing university systems. This enhances the security of your accounts by adding an extra layer of protection beyond just a password.

Why has Western implemented MFA?

Western is implementing MFA to strengthen the security of student accounts and protect sensitive information from unauthorised access. It helps prevent unauthorised individuals from accessing your university-related data.

How does MFA work?

MFA typically involves using something you know (like a password) along with something you have (like a mobile device). This could include receiving a verification code via SMS, using a mobile app, or a hardware token.

Do I have to enrol in MFA, and is it mandatory?

Yes, the Microsoft MFA solution allows you to register multiple devices. This provides flexibility in case one of your devices is unavailable. You need to set multiple devices up within the MFA app.

What if I lose my MFA device or have issues accessing it?

In special cases and following screening to prove your identity, our IT Service Desk can provide a process for resolving such issues. It is time consuming and involves contacting the IT Service Desk and using alternative methods for MFA verification. We advise this is only used for emergencies (phone stolen, broken, or lost).

Is MFA required every time I log in?

The frequency of MFA prompts may vary, but it is typically required during initial login from a new device or after a certain period of inactivity to ensure ongoing security.
