All Welcome
Professorial Lecture Presented by Professor Mary Hawkins - Journeys in Anthropology.
You are invited to attend the Professorial Lecture Presented by Professor Mary Hawkins - Journeys in Anthropology.
Location: Western Sydney University, Building V, Room V.G.05, Kingswood Campus, Second Avenue Kingswood NSW 2747
This event will be held after the School of Social Sciences School Meeting and lunch, we hope you can join us.
ABSTRACT: Anthropology has always involved journeys, frequently solitary ones, and traditionally to remote places, for a lengthy period of time. Anthropologists have had ‘a people’, and a ‘field site’, wherein they practiced ethnography, and from which they returned to ‘write up’. At ‘home’, they swapped stories of ‘their people’, and sometimes admitted, but only to other anthropologists, and sotto voce, that they found their fieldwork hard. Lonely, exhausting, and sometimes bewildering. This last, particularly the bewilderment, rarely found its way into ethnographic monographs, or articles. Rather, ethnographers attempted to persuade you that they had the key to a culture, that they could provide a ‘real understanding’ of the lives of people quite different to them, and, it was assumed, to their readers.I hope you read the paragraph above with mounting irritation. Who are these anthropologists, dropping in and out of the lives of others, claiming a people and their culture, and claiming to know them and it? Neo-colonial arrogance, that’s what it is. And yes, much of the practice of anthropology was that. But, it was not just that. In this talk, I want to tell you a story of continuity, and of change, of how and why anthropology changed, was sometimes forced to change, and what that means for its practice today. I will draw primarily on my own experiences, but will situate them in the context of the broad field of anthropological practice.
BIOGRAPHY: Mary Hawkins holds a BA (Hons.) and a PhD, both in social anthropology, from the University of Sydney. Mary does most of her empirical research in Indonesia, where she lived for five years, and in Iceland. She has worked for the University of Sydney, for Newcastle University, for the World Bank and the UNDP, but most of her working life has been at Western Sydney University. Mary speaks Indonesian, Banjar, terrible Javanese, and her Icelandic is woeful but shows some signs of improving.

All Welcome
Disabilities Studies Reading Group – October meeting.
You are invited to attend the Disabilities Studies Reading Group – October meeting.
PhD students, (Critical) Disability Studies Scholars, Activists and Advocates
The Disability Studies SoSS Research Collaboration (SRC) would like to invite those interested in Disability Studies to attend our next reading group which will be hybrid (Face-to-face and online). In the next reading session, we will focus on “On the Government of Disability” Author Shelley Tremain.
Abstract: “The social model of disability represents the disability movements ‘big idea’ (Oliver 2013), and it ‘enjoys currency in the academy, the activist world and spheres of policy making and professional practice’ (Goodley 2017:12). A central aspect of the social model involves the splintering between impairment and disability, where the former refers to private, individual, bodily, and functional attributes, and the latter refers to the broader social and structural factors that dis-able people. This splintering meant ‘impairment’ became something of a pariah within social model thinking and scholarship; it was ‘safer not mentioned at all’ (Crow 1996: 209) because ‘to mention biology, to admit pain, to confront our impairments has been to risk the oppressors seizing on evidence that disability is really about physical limitation after all’ (Shakespeare 1992: 40). These tensions, amongst others, inspired Shelley Tremain’s (2001) classic intervention: ‘On the Government of Disability’. Taking a critical disability studies perspective, seeking to move beyond the social model, taking seriously the construction and materialisation of impairment and disability through social (re)signification, and exploring the works of Foucault of Butler—scholars surprisingly absent in too much of disability studies scholarship—Tremain’s intervention provides a provocative rethinking for the field.

About the Disability Studies SoSS Research Collaboration
The Disability Studies SRC is a space for collaborative research that explores the social life of ‘disability’ from a range of diverse standpoints and frameworks. Driven by a desire to explore social understandings of ‘disability’ and what this means for everyday life for persons with disabilities, the group aims to co-produce high impact research that will facilitate inclusion, justice and disability rights. Disability is recognised as a complex social, political, cultural and diverse lived experience. The research of the group cuts across interests in some of the following research areas: disability and social inclusion/exclusion; disability and education; disability and ageing; disability and poverty; disability, violence, and marginality; ableism; disability, gender and sexualities; and disability, race, ethnicity, and gender. The group’s work fosters collaborative research engagement with persons with disabilities and their organisations Disabled Peoples Organisations) to actively facilitate research and disseminate knowledge that addresses disability, ableism, and disablism in public and private life. The group is an interdisciplinary endeavour and works in collaboration with higher degree research students and early-,mid-, and late-career academics, providing opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, mentoring and research engagement and dissemination.
Accessibility: The reading group will be run monthly in hybrid mode, that is, face to face and zoom, simultaneously.
Auslan interpreters will be provided as requested by registered participants on a monthly basis.
Please register your attendance and advise if you require the zoom link by emailing:
