Telstra International Roaming and International Dialling

Telstra International Roaming

International Roaming is a feature that can be activated on UWS mobile telephones for those staff members travelling overseas on business. If this feature is required for overseas business travel please complete the request form in our MyIT portal (opens in a new window) (staff login required). Please submit the form at least 1 full week before departure.

Before you go overseas

  • Submit the request via MyIT (opens in a new window) at least 1 full week prior to departure.
  • Make sure your phone's network mode and network selection is set to 'Automatic', if unsure how please refer to your phone manual.
  • Data Roaming is turned off by default on an iPhone, but please check to make sure. Tap on Settings > General > Network (Mobile Data for iPhone 5) > Data Roaming should be set to OFF.
  • If you need data while travelling, make sure you turn off push email. Tap on Settings > Mail,Contacts and Calendars > Tap on Fetch New Data, and set Push to OFF. Now your iPhone won't constantly contact the network to pull down all your emails including spam, but you will still be able to manually check your emails.
  • Where possible, only check emails using a Wi-Fi connection. There is no charge for data downloaded over Wi-Fi. Turn off mobile data while using a Wi-Fi hotspot, so that you will be certain you are connecting using the hotspot, rather than your phone's mobile service.

Making a call from abroad

Local and national calls in overseas countries are made in the same way as when you are in Australia. Don't forget to include area codes if you are calling a fixed line number in a different area code to you.

To make an international call to a fixed line phone, dial +, followed by the country code, area code (omitting the first zero in the area code) and then the number. For example, to dial the UWS switchboard from your mobile when overseas dial "+61 2 9852 5222"

To call an international mobile number, dial +, followed by the country code and then the mobile number (omitting the first zero in the mobile number).

To call an Australian mobile number, dial +61 followed by the mobile number (omitting the first zero in the mobile number).

0011 is the international dial out code unique to Australia. It will not work overseas, so you need to dial + instead. Most mobile phones use + as the international dial out code. If you find this does not work on your mobile phone, you will need to consult your phone manual.

Retrieving Messagebank (voicemail) when abroad

Once connected to a local network you can quick dial 101 or #101# to access your Messagebank.

By diverting calls to Messagebank you can choose when you want to respond to messages and also reduce your roaming charges.

To set up your Messagebank service, just call 101 from your mobile. Then follow the voice prompts to set up your greeting and PIN. You need to do this before leaving Australia.

  • The cost of all incoming calls are charged to your mobile. Your caller pays what they would normally pay, while you pay the additional charge to send the call overseas to your mobile.
  • Visit the Telstra website (opens in a new window) and add your destination, it will calculate the charges for calls and SMS and will even give you an estimate of data usage.

GPRS and Data use overseas: Data is charged at 1cent per kilobyte, with a minimum of 10 kilobytes per download; 1 megabyte of data download costs a minimum of $20.
