Emerging Leaders

A leadership development program for aspiring leaders at Western

This early leadership development opportunity is intended for new supervisors and aspiring leaders, and is open to both professional and academic permanent staff.

The program features experiential learning across essential leadership topics, and provides practical skills and insights to develop authentic leadership capabilities in emerging leaders.

Objectives

  • To develop authentic leadership values and mindsets in emerging leaders at Western
  • To provide practical skills and insights across a range of essential leadership topics, such as communication, self-management, and emotional intelligence.
  • To facilitate collaboration and discussion of leadership topics between academic and professional staff
  • To stimulate leadership discussions between supervisors and team members, thereby developing strong and cohesive teams

Program Plan

The program consists of seven sessions (Launch and  six modules), scheduled throughout the year:

  • Launch: Orientation to program purpose and structure
  • Leading Self: Personal growth and self-awareness
  • Leadership Impact: Emotional intelligence, empathy and self-management
  • Communication is Key: Enhancing team and leadership communication skills
  • Managing Projects: Time and project management (online)
  • Developing as a Leader: Neuroscience and psychological safety
  • Leading at Western: Contextual advice from experienced leaders at Western

Registrations

To participate in this program, aspiring leaders or new supervisors must be nominated by their supervisor, prior to a selection process. Nominations for 2025 intake will open in October.
