Many graduates that he has guided through their research now hold significant positions in industry thereby enhancing the reputation of UWS.

During his tenure as Head of School he succeeded in forging a new spirit of collaboration among the various discipline groups of staff across the campuses at a time of enormous change within the School. He demonstrated remarkable leadership abilities to develop a strategic vision for the School, to champion ideas, to communicate, and to act on their implementation. John was one of the few School heads who continued to take a teaching load during his appointment in order to know better know the current students at UWS and to promote research culture from day one.

He has left the School of Natural Sciences with a remodelled academic program and an enriched and accelerating research output which has positioned the school well for the future.

The Board of Trustees of the University of Western Sydney has resolved to confer the title of Emeritus Professor of the University, on John Bartlett in recognition of his distinguished academic contribution to teaching and research in the field of materials and service to the University.
