More on Multiplying and Dividing Integers
The rules for multiplying and dividing two integers are shown in the tables below. When multiplying or dividing you need to check if the numbers are positive or negative as the combination will tell you if the answer is positive or negative.
Summary: multiplying integers ($\times$)
Multiply | Result | Example |
---|---|---|
positive number $\times$ positive number | positive number | $5 \times 2 =10$ |
positive number $\times$ negative number | negative number | $5 \times (-3)=-15$ |
negative number $\times$ positive number | negative number | $(-7) \times 3=-21$ |
negative number $\times$ negative number | positive number | $(-6) \times (-2)=12$ |
zero $\times$ positive number | zero | $0 \times 3=0$ |
zero $\times$ negative number | zero | $0 \times (-2)=0$ |
Test your understanding of the rules for multiplication of integers by answering these questions.

$4 \times (-6)=$ | ||
$(-8) \times (-3)=$ | ||
$(-12)\times 0=$ | ||
$(-2)-\times (-3) \times 6=$ | ||
$(-2) \times (-2) \times (-1)=$ |
Summary: dividing integers ($\div$)
Multiply | Result | Example |
---|---|---|
positive number $\div$ positive number | positive number | $10 \div 5 =2$ |
positive number $\div$ negative number | negative number | $16 \div (-8)=-2$ |
negative number $\div$ positive number | negative number | $(-25) \div 5=-5$ |
negative number $\div$ negative number | positive number | $(-30) \div (-3)=10$ |
zero $\div$ positive number | zero | $0 \div 9=0$ |
zero $\div$ negative number | zero | $0 \div (-5)=0$ |
positive number $\div$ zero | undefined (has no answer) | $6 \div 0$ has no answer |
negative number $\div$ zero | undefined | $(-20) \div 0$ has no answer |
