1          K          let's have a start thank you for helping me with my research our research first I am going to ask you some questions about yourself so feel free if you would like to ask me any question about myself at anytime and after that we are going to look at the same pictures and ask each other question . ok questions

5          K          ok let's have a start first ok so when did you arrived at arri when did you arrive at Australia?

9          K          yeah two thousand ok so how old were you when you arrived at you know came to Australia first time? sorry

11        K          yeah oh not first time you know iie(Japanese) so two September

15        K          thirty-five years old thank you and how um since then how long you know have you been here in Australia? ah eight years

19        K          eight years so and I would like to know wh when um when did you learn English because your English is very good

20        Y          I started learning English since I was twelve

21        K          you were twelve ok where did you learn it?

22        Y          from the secondary school

23        K          uh in Japan?

24        Y          in Japan

26        Y          and I went to the junior college two year college

27        K          uh

28        Y          majored in English language

29        K          uh

30        Y          then I went to Canada for one year

31        K          oh ok Canada?

34        Y          when I was twenty-four

36        Y          on working holiday visa

37        K          uh good what did you do you know in Canada?

38        Y          um I was on working holiday visa

42        Y          and then I went to a language school actually to learn French

44        Y          uh to learn French

51        K          so how many languages actually do you speak?

52        Y          um I can speak three languages Japanese English and French

53        K          uh so how about you know in Jap at home currently you know which language do you use?

56        Y          a little bit of Russian

57        K          a little bit of Russian wow it's interesting

58        Y          a very very little

59        K          uh ok so I would like to could you tell me your language maintenance strategies? you know like you know how do you keep you know your Jap actually your Japanese

60        Y          um because I work as a translator

61        K          uh

62        Y          I use both English and Japanese daily

63        K          uh

64        Y          and I have to write and read documents in both language daily

65        K          uh

66        Y          so I think that's the maintenance strategy

67        K          so you said your occupation is trans

68        Y          translator

70        Y          and I also read books in both languages

71        K          uh ok so now could you tell me your occupation in Japan? what did you do?

72        Y          um ok um after I came back from Canada which was I was twenty-four

73        K          uh

74        Y          twenty-five I started working as an interpreter for a telephone company

75        K          uh

76        Y          and since then I did interpreter and document translation job as a freelancer

77        K          uh

78        Y          for how many years for about ten or eleven years

79        K          uh

80        Y          and I came to Australia

81        K          oh ok hum very good … hum and yes so today your husband is here

83        K          so yeah what is um your husband doing? your his job

84        Y          um he works as a public servant

85        K          oh really he works as a public servant do you have you know any children

90        Y          my husband's children

92        Y          two two children but they've already moved out

93        K          oh moved out so now you you live in wi just with your your husband

98        Y          but kids come back maybe every two weeks or some thing

101     K          your kids come home so when you know your husband's kids um come back come home what do you normally do? before then

102     Y          um I cook the dinner and they eat and we watch tv together

103     K          ok do you um often go out with your children?

104     Y          not really no no they just come home to relax I guess

107     K          so how about you know do you oh how about do you watch tv with them?

108     Y          yes yes we do we watch tv with them we also have movie channels

110     Y          so we record the movies during the week and then anyone comes home the weekend we just watch the movies together

114     Y          no I cook for them they don't cook (laugh)

115     K          they don't cook oh how about you know you said you have two children are they you know boys or girls? you know one boy um um one girl?

128     Y          not not myself but um um our eldest son went to Thailand and Malaysia last year

131     K          oh really hum yeah I just wondering because you know your two kids have already left home but is there any you know their possessive thing (XXX) still there?

132     Y          um they left some stuff so I have some stuff in their closet

134     Y          but not much left in the lounge or the living room because it's it's a public space

146     Y          and some of them are our kids' they didn't take them because they are all CDs and they are not interested in the same kind of music all the time
