About the Project

We are offering a research PhD Scholarship to a highly motivated individual who is keen to contribute to research within the field of Indigenous LGBTIQ+ within Australia.The successful PhD candidate will  contribute to the ARC Linkage Project ‘Walking my Path’, which  explores the experiences of Indigenous gender and/or sexuality diverse peoples in New South Wales (NSW). The broader ARC Linkage project is in partnership withBlaQ Aboriginal Corporation.

The PhD candidate will carry out independent research into an area of their interest that is in line with the aims and objectives of the broader ARC Linkage project ‘Walking my Path;. . The proposed PhD project can be place-based focused, comparative across different spatial contexts (remote, rural and urban) or more generally structured around NSW.  The successful scholarship holder will participate in a student internship placement at BlaQ Aboriginal Corporation to gain engagement experience working with First Nations LGBTIQ+ Communities and Services.

The candidate will be supervised by Professor Corrinne Sullivan and Dr Kim Spurway.

The successful PhD candidate will be trained in research methods and approaches by participating in various aspects of the project to learn about techniques used in focus group and interview research processes in addition to  mid-range to large scale survey development along with data analysis and interpretation. The PhD project aims to build the successful applicant’s capacity in qualitative and qualitative research methodology.

The PhD candidate will be based at the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) at Western Sydney University. ICS is one of the largest dedicated concentrations of socio-cultural research in Australia. It aims to carry out innovative interdisciplinary research into continuities and transformations in culture and society in a way that contributes to understanding and shaping contemporary local and global life.

What does the scholarship provide?

  • Domestic students will receive a tax-free stipend of $32,192 p/a per annum for up to 3.5 years to support living costs, supported by the Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset.
  • Support for conference attendance, fieldwork and additional costs as approved by School/Institute.

International applicants are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria

This scholarship opportunity is open to all domestic students  who are keen to apply their skills to key issues in understanding Indigenous gender/sexuality diverse peoples’ unique experiences as the central theme to their PhD project.

The successful applicant should:

  • hold qualifications and experience equal to one of the following (i) an Australian First Class Bachelor (Honours) degree, (ii) coursework Masters with at least 25% research component, (iii) Research Masters degree, or (iv) equivalent international qualifications.
  • demonstrate strong academic performance in subjects relevant to social, cultural, sexuality and gender diversity.
  • have an understanding or appreciation of the importance of Indigenous informed and designed research.
  • be willing to learn research methods and approaches in relation to Indigenous peoples, places and philosophies.
  • be enthusiastic and highly motivated to undertake further study at an advanced level.
  • International applicants are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.
