To Promote Excellence in Postgraduate Research at the Hawkesbury Campus

The F.G. Swain Award is in recognition of the significant contribution of Emeritus Professor Swain to Hawkesbury, first as Principal of Hawkesbury Agricultural College over the period 1972 to 1988 and then as Deputy Vice Chancellor and CEO of Hawkesbury from 1989 to 1993.


The objectives of the award are to:


In 2023 a total allocation of up to $10,000 is available for the F.G. Swain Award. Depending on the applications received, this may be awarded to a single grant, or to multiple grants within the total allocation for 2023. The funds are to be spent within 12 months of notification of the award.

The funds may be used to support a specific activity such as:

* Equipment becomes Western Sydney University property at acquisition.

** Funding is not to support general living expenses or tuition fees. Conference expenses are also excluded as funding is available through the relevant academic unit.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must be enrolled in a Doctoral program at Western Sydney University, be based on the Hawkesbury Campus and be able to demonstrate good progress in their research. Local or international and full-time or part-time candidates are eligible to apply.


Successful applicants will be required to provide a brief report to the Hawkesbury Foundation Board at the conclusion of their project activity.

2. Compile your CV (including any refereed publications, popular articles, presentations at conferences and prizes).

3. Acquire a letter of support from your Principal Supervisor.

4. All applications and supporting documentation must be submitted directly to the Graduate Research School as follows:

Incomplete applications or applications that do not conform to the above requirements will not be considered.

Adjudication will be by a panel chaired by the Hawkesbury Foundation President (or nominee) and include representatives of Western Sydney University academia and the Graduate Research School. The panel will attempt to announce the successful applicant(s) by no later than Friday 21 July 2023. The Hawkesbury Foundation reserves the right not to award the funds.
