  Join us for our Women (seen) lunchtime talk, Intercultural Sister Kin-a talk with Marian Abboud and Vicki Van Hout.

  Marian is a Western Sydney based socially engaged artist of Lebanese heritage who graduated from the University of Western Sydney with a Bachelor of Visual Communication. She is passionate about creating meaning across perceived borders of place, language, and identity. She has exhibited extensively locally and nationally and has collaborated on many dance and performance-based projects including Volume at the AGNSW, Mona Foma in Hobart, 24 Frames, Carriageworks, and her recent performance, Not Her Reflection, a travelling performance at Artspace. FCMG, Granville Art Centre, Pari and UTS Library.

  Vicki Van Hout’s First Nations heritage hails from Wiradjuri country in far Western NSW and she has Dutch, English and Afghan roots as well. Vicki has dedicated her career to Indigenous arts practice as a graduate of NAISDA, Australia ‘s premier Indigenous Dance College. Vicki returned from New York after graduating from Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance NYC to dance with both leading Aboriginal dance companies Bangarra Dance Theatre and AIDT.  Vicki has won the prestigious Australia Council For The Arts Dance Awards and is the current recipient of Creating Australia's Dance Fellowship.

  Marian Abboud and Vicki Van Hout's careers crossed paths as part of a speed dating event pairing multiple dancers with visual artists to then make a pitch to the joint organisers Parramatta Artists Studios and FORM Dance Projects (then known as Western Sydney Dance Action). They won with a work titled Behind The Zig Zag.

  Approximately fifteen years later Abboud and Van Hout have maintained their collaborative partnership which can be distilled as a continuing cultural exploration examining the ways Abboud's Lebanese and Van Hout's Indigenous heritages intersect including paradigms surrounding temporality, being, belief and magic.

  Their talk will focus on the way they navigate kinship structures, more specifically Marian’s inclusion of her immediate family in the process of her solo, and their combined image making.

  Masculinity, Backlash and Antifeminism - Dr Lucy Nicholas

  How can we understand the resurgence of masculinism in Australia and elsewhere? How can we challenge antifeminism and the increase in misogyny?

  How can we understand the resurgence of masculinism in Australia and elsewhere? How can we challenge antifeminism and the increase in misogyny?

  Lucy Nicholas will discuss the changes in contemporary masculinity and the worrying public resurgence of reactionary misogyny, especially online, and how we can use academic ideas to make sense of them. They will consider the emotional and ideological drivers of these ideas, some of the impacts they have, and how they may be challenged.

  With a diverse academic background, Dr Nicholas received their PhD from the University of Edinburgh before embarking on a career that has taken them from the University of Portsmouth to their current position in Australia. Throughout their journey, they have demonstrated a passion for teaching, covering a wide range of subjects including sociology, social and political theory, gender and sexualities, and academic skills.

  Dr Nicholas is the author of two influential books and their first book, “Queer Post-Gender Ethics,” published by Palgrave McMillan in 2014, explores the intersections of gender, sexuality, and ethics. Their second book, “The Persistence of Global Masculinism,” co-authored with Chris Agius, was published in 2018, shedding light on the complex dynamics of masculinity in a global context.

  Lucy is currently working on two streams of research: one on sexuality and gender diversity, and one on men, masculinity, and violence prevention. With their expertise and commitment to advancing knowledge in gender and sexuality studies, Dr Lucy Nicholas continues to make significant contributions to academia and beyond.

  National symposium on Australian Traditional Medicine

  The symposium will showcase the development and achievements in Australian traditional medicine, discuss the current issues and foster collaborations.

  The symposium will showcase the development and achievements in Australian traditional medicine, discuss the current issues and foster collaborations.

  You are invited to the inaugural National Symposium on Australian Traditional Medicine hosted by NICM HRI Western Sydney University in collaboration with Australian National University. The symposium will gather First Peoples of Australia, policy makers, regulators, academics and researchers aiming to showcase the development and achievements in Australian traditional medicine, discuss the current issues and challenges, and foster strong partnerships and collaborations.

  Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the Traditional Owners of Country now known as Australia. Indigenous Peoples of this continent are a diverse people, making up over 250 different language groups, each with their own unique cultures, languages and practices. Accordingly, the medicines used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are unique and recognised as the oldest continuing Indigenous culture in the world, holding significant Indigenous values in biodiversity and landscapes across Country.

  Respectfully, no one term has been agreed upon by Indigenous Peoples themselves and their respective language groups. The focus of the National Symposium will defer to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditional medicines, so we respectfully use the term “Australian Traditional Medicine” to represent these medicines as a whole. We acknowledge that the following terms are also used, along with many others: Indigenous Traditional Medicines, First Nations Traditional Medicines, Bush Medicines, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traditional Medicines, Indigenous Cultural Medicines and Aboriginal Cultural Medicines.

  Theme: Preclinical and clinical research; IP, ICIP, Indigenous governance and ethics; regulation and commercialisation pathways.
