Western Sydney University honours Muruwari Elder, Aunty Rita Wright

Muruwari woman, Aunty Rita Wright, will be recognised for her tireless dedication to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities of Greater Western Sydney with a Community Fellowship from Western Sydney University.
Through the award, Western Sydney University formally acknowledges Aunty Rita’s commitment to promoting strong relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, and service and program providers.
Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Barney Glover, paid tribute to Aunty Rita, noting her positive influence as Elder-in-Residence at Ngroo Education Incorporated, where she has developed culturally appropriate programs and services to support the education of Aboriginal children.
“Aunty Rita’s story is a compelling tale of advocacy in the face of adversity. As a member of the Stolen Generation, she dedicated her life to the advancement of Aboriginal people, particularly in Western Sydney, by agitating for change and sharing her knowledge with non-Aboriginal people,” said Professor Glover.
“Professionally, Aunty Rita’s work has transformed the future of young children in the region. Her work on the development of the ‘Walking Together’ program – now used as a model for similar programs throughout NSW – supports a culturally appropriate approach to the early education of Aboriginal children, helping to improve attendance and learning outcomes for students.”
Aunty Rita Wright said: “This award from the University is an honour for me and the community. It has always been a privilege to contribute to the welfare of all people in Western Sydney, especially Aboriginal people, and I am proud of all of our achievements.”
Aunty Rita will be awarded with a Community Fellowship at Western Sydney University’s graduation ceremony, 2.30pm on 4 May 2018 at the University’s Parramatta South campus.
