Researchers trace the caring journeys of local Greek communities

University of Western Sydney researchers are investigating how older members of the Greek community make decisions about their health and aged care.

The 'Caring Journeys' research team are hosting a focus group discussion at the St George Migrant Resource Centre on June 21st, 2012.

Service providers to the Greek community in the St George Sutherland Shire region are invited to participate in this focus group and share their views about aged care services.

Associate Professor Debbie Horsfall, the lead researcher from the UWS School of Social Sciences and Psychology, says the focus group will aim to understand the cultural factors that influence whether people seek out or accept formal assistance.

"We are also particularly interested in hearing from older people who act as carers, to find out how much formal and informal support they currently receive, and how much they know about the types of support services that are available," says Associate Professor Horsfall.

"Ultimately, we want to understand the cultural beliefs and attitudes of this group of carers, and to identify the key features of aged care services that may be an incentive, or a disincentive, for them."

The Caring Journeys Project is a partnership between the University of Western Sydney, the University of New South Wales, Multicultural Health, and the St George Migrant Resource Centre.

Aged-care service providers and Greek carers who are interested in contributing their knowledge, understandings, and experiences are invited to contact Sofia Zogalis on 9597 5455 or s.zogalis@uws.edu.au

The results of the focus groups and interviews will be applied to creating better services and support for older carers in the Greek community. A Greek speaking research assistant will facilitate the interviews.
