‘Transcribing Darkness’ brings light to UWS Art Gallery

Art exhibitions at the University of Western Sydney Art Galleries in 2013 are off to a flying start with former UWS staff member Mike Birtchnell exhibiting his Transcribing Darkness – a collection inextricably tied to UWS itself.

Transcribing Darkness is a collection of 11 large paper works that were created at the UWS ‘Access’ print media studio on the Bankstown Campus between 1995 and 2001. The exhibition seeks to highlight the basic correlation between drawing and printmaking.

“The work seeks to demonstrate the nature and activity of drawing and its fundamental links to printmaking,” says Mr Birtchnell. “I seek to seduce audience by the attraction to surface, and the notion of time and effort within the making of the work.”

Through a process of viewing, connecting and visually investigating, the audience of Transcribing Darkness is exposed to the ritualistic act of drawing, and an exploration of surface interaction and depth.

As the driving force behind the development of an on-campus professional print media studio, Head of Print Media, and Senior Lecturer in the Bachelor of Arts (Visual and Media Arts) at UWS from 1995 to 2001, Mr Birtchnell feels exhibiting at UWS is another example of art-based educational experiences.

“I have always been very impressed with the links UWS has made with the arts and particularly its art collection which allows the university to showcase art in general, and to enhance the cultural infrastructure of the university and the educational experience of staff and students,” says Mr Birtchnell.

“I have always been keen to show work within the academic environment - after all I have been within academia as an artist-educator for a very long time and feel strongly that the results of my practice should be seen in the context of my teaching.”
