Territories and space collide at the ‘Vibratory Fields and Surfaces’ exhibition

Vibratory Fields and Surfaces gallery

The Vibratory Fields and Surfaces exhibition is now at the Margaret Whitlam Galleries on the Parramatta campus of the University of Western Sydney.

Located within the Female Orphan School, the exhibition explores territory and space in an abstract manner. The exhibition features work from four artists; Celia Gullett, Ian Jones, Jennifer Keeler-Milne and Gordon Waters.

The exhibition was opened on Saturday 16 March by Dr Marilyn Walters who believes the exhibition addresses fundamental aspects of human life.

“The works examine the interplay of territory – our comfort zone, what is familiar, and space – the unknown, an absence of boundaries,” says Dr Walters.

“In this exhibition we are treated to four very different ways of going about the exploration of surface, of colour and the endless variety of line and mark, challenging our understanding of the territory of art making.”

Celia Gullett’s work focuses on ‘surface’, and experiments with wax and other ways of layering, inspired by the patterns and rhythms found in nature. Ian Jones’ images combine the spatial dynamic and psychological tension of gestural drawing with patterned fields and explorations of the grid.

In contrast, the subject matter of Jennifer Keeler-Milne's work are glowing halos, circles of semi-abstract fragments of light  inspired by the street lights of China and the interiors of Parisian buildings.

Gordon Waters' works explores the randomness of mark making and the line, as well as the spatial potential of abstract painting utilising the deliberate layering of the painted surface, stencils and glazes. Within these layers of paint and ink are indirect references to landscape, as well as components of design such as architectural and mosaic motifs, and calligraphic lettering.

The Vibratory Fields and Surfaces exhibition will be on display until 31 May 2013.
