WSU supports measures to create more prepared financial planners
Western Sydney University’s Associate Professor Sharon Taylor from the School of Business has welcomed the Federal Government’s new educational requirements for financial planners, and the creation of FASEA – a regulating body with representatives from educational institutions and industry – saying the measures will only result in “better and more prepared financial advisers”.
“These changes, which will require many financial advisors to upgrade their qualifications in order to practice, will help ensure clients receive a more comprehensive and universal best practice no matter who they work with,” she says.
In early 2017, legislation was passed requiring financial advisers to hold a degree to practice. New financial advisers need a degree by 2019, while existing advisors need qualifications by 2024.
Director of Postgraduate Education at the School of Business, Dr Laurel Jackson, says students looking to embark upon a career in financial planning, or existing financial planners needing to upgrade their qualifications should rest assured that, from second quarter this year, all of the University’s postgraduate financial planning programs will meet the new Financial Adviser Standards and Ethics Authority Limited (FASEA) requirements – including a newly launched accelerated graduate diploma.
The University’s Masters of Financial Planning, running since 1996, is also already fully accredited with the FPA and TPB.
“Our fully online and highly specialised programs are designed to accommodate people wanting to get the qualifications they need, without having to pause their careers,” Dr Jackson says.
