Western Sydney University student named NSW International Student of the Year

Western Sydney University student, Narayan (Nabin) Gautam, has received the NSW International Student of the Year Award – ELICOS, in recognition of his significant contribution to the community.

This prestigious award is a reflection of Nabin’s work on student rights, health and mental wellbeing and the impact he has had on his peers and colleagues at Western Sydney University and the industry more broadly.

Arriving in Australia from Nepal in January 2019, Nabin completed a Diploma and Advanced Diploma at private institutions before commencing a Bachelor of Tourism Management at Western Sydney University.

In 2024 Nabin will assume the position of President of the Nepalese Student Club at Western, boasting a membership of over 400 students.

This year he has worked as the Executive Secretary of the club and has been actively involved in supporting his fellow peers while raising awareness about mental health and overall well-being.

“We organise cultural events aimed at fostering inclusivity and mutual support. Furthermore, we recently conducted Mental Health First Aid training for ten members who now play a crucial role in supporting their peers' mental well-being.”

“In addition to my involvement with the club, I have been instrumental in facilitating ‘Bhet Ghat Sanjh’, a monthly gathering where open discussions take place on topics of significant relevance to students' overall well-being.”

A proud ambassador of the University he actively participates in various events, helping students navigate their studies and actively promoting the University.

Nabin also holds the position of National Public Relations Officer within the Student Advisory Council under the Non-Residential Nepalese Association (NRNA) Australia and serves as the secretary for the Australian Nepalese Blood Donor Association.

Having graduated with his degree earlier this month, Nabin reflects on the impact his studies have had on him as he works to become a social worker while maintaining his commitment to social engagement.

“My academic voyage at Western has been an amazing experience, profoundly influencing my career and undoubtedly one of the best decisions I've made.”

“I eagerly anticipate the start of my Master of Social Work (Qualifying) program at Western’s Parramatta City campus next year.”

Since November 2022, he has worked as a Contact Service Officer within the University’s Student Services Hub, providing support to prospective domestic and international students as they embark on their university journey.

“Western has been instrumental in shaping the past two years of my life. Commencing my university employment, greatly aided in balancing my studies and workload, ultimately leading to my graduation with distinction in my bachelor's degree.”

Reflecting on why he chose Western, Nabin recalls feeling drawn to the dedicated support and engagement for international students, as well as the convenience of having various locations across the western Sydney region.

“Western Sydney University stands out for its exceptional student care and access to a wealth of opportunities such as The Academy, on-campus employment, social engagement and many more while pursuing the degree,” said Nabin.
