This year, Western Sydney University will take part in its ninth consecutive Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, a celebration of gay, lesbian, bisexual, intersex and queer diversity and community.

The annual parade, now in its 45th year, will be of a global scale as the biggest event of the Sydney WorldPride Festival 2023.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Barney Glover AO is proud that the University continues to be a sector leader in LGBTIQ inclusion.

“The University has a longstanding and proud commitment to supporting our LGBTIQ community and we are excited to take part in important community events such as Mardi Gras,” said Professor Glover.

This year, the University’s forty strong contingent, will march under the theme ‘Together we dream big’, an idea that celebrates the diversity, richness, and respect of the University’s LGBTIQ community of staff, students, and alumni.

The University’s Queer Collective is a network providing peer support, resources and a safe space for sexuality and gender diverse students.

Queer Collective representative, and student Emilee Mein, is excited to be representing Western Sydney University at the parade.

“Having the University show its support for events such as Mardi Gras is a vital symbol to the entire LGBTIQ community in western Sydney,” she said.

“It allows us to celebrate our personal experiences and journeys while showing others that there is support at the University.”

Support for students and staff at Western Sydney University includes the Ally Network, Rainbow Western and the Queer Collective – groups and initiatives committed to creating an inclusive and respectful culture.
