Urban Transformations Research Centre (UTRC)

The newly formed Urban Transformations Research Centre (UTRC) is set to lead urban transformations research. The impact-driven Centre is focused on guiding communities and infrastructure into sustainable, equitable and resilient futures. With a focus on co-designed research that engages industry, government and the communities it serves, it is well placed to address the complex challenges posed by the contemporary urban environment. The Centre’s research and innovation programs include:  

People-centred sustainable precinct design:

• healthy, inclusive, and resilient urban places
• sustainable transport modalities, healthy placemaking and urban ecosystems
• sustainable urban design, planning, management, governance and leadership.

Resilient construction and infrastructure:

• sustainable construction, safe and resilient infrastructures
• advanced construction, structural engineering, engineering materials and manufacturing
• improved and sustainable building materials, construction procedures and circular economy.

Systems innovation and demonstration:

• energy, water, transport, waste, and resource systems
• life cycle and circular economy assessment, net zero analysis and urban metabolism modelling
• built environment, polycentric governance, healthy homes and decentralised net zero precincts.

Launch Pad

Launch Pad delivers a range of innovation and entrepreneurship focused programs to students, researchers and industry partners at the Engineering Innovation Hub all aimed at driving increased innovation throughout parramatta and the broader western Sydney region.  These programs include:

• Startup Acceleration – a range of stage-based startup programs including a 2-3 day pre-accelerator to support initial business concept ideation, a 12 week early-stage accelerator targeted to assist startups to develop an MVP (minimum viable product) and a 12-week later stage accelerator that assists startups to scale, access funding and build traction in the market.
• Entrepreneurship Training – the Venture Makers program and Bachelor of Entrepreneurship programs both deliver a series of highly applied learning and are co-designed and co-delivered with industry partners supporting students to develop entrepreneurial skills while exploring new startup business opportunities.
• Advanced Manufacturing industry development – The Western 4.0 advanced manufacturing innovation cluster is a group of 30 SME companies that meet regularly at EIH to hear from expert speakers on a range of Industry 4.0 related topics as well as discuss collaboration opportunities and explore ways western Sydney manufacturing can be developed to take maximum advantage of opportunities such as the new airport and Aerotropolis.

Giramondo

The Giramondo Publishing Company is an independent, university-based literary publisher of award-winning poetry, fiction and non-fiction, renowned for the quality of its writing, editing and book design. It was established in December 1995 in order to publish innovative and adventurous literary work, that might not otherwise find publication because of its subtle appeal; to stimulate exchange between Australian writers and readers and their counterparts overseas; and to build common ground between the academy and the marketplace. Since 2005 Giramondo has published from the Writing and Society Research Centre at Western Sydney University.

Giramondo’s titles have won or been shortlisted for all the major Australian literary prizes. We are committed to developing the literature of the place we publish from – Giramondo was the first publisher to bring the writing of Western Sydney to national attention – and to building the international standing of outstanding Australian authors, like Alexis Wright and Gerald Murnane. Our reputation rests on our willingness to take risks, not only with authors who have a distinctive voice or who write from diverse backgrounds, but with literary forms like poetry, the novella, the collective biography, the journal, and translations from other literatures. Giramondo also brings neglected Australian classics back into print, and publishes the prestigious literary magazine HEAT, known for its support of emerging and established authors. Throughout, Giramondo’s guiding principle has been the enrichment and development of contemporary Australian literature.

Sydney Review of Books

The journal was established in 2013, partly in response to the diminished critical discussion of literature and the arts in the mainstream media in Australia. We’re committed to original and informed literary criticism and to the essay in all its forms. We work with Australia’s best writers to publish essays and reviews that expand and enrich Australian literary culture.

Each week the SRB presents new review essays, feature essays, and interviews, as well as curating a lively series of public programs throughout the year. We support writers and writing and each year offer a number of residencies and fellowships for critics at all stages of their career.

We publish online to a global audience from our base in Parramatta at the Writing and Society Research Centre at Western Sydney University. Read about our team and Advisory Board here.

The Sydney Review of Books is an online literary magazine established in 2013. The journal is funded by Western Sydney University's Writing and Society Research Centre, the Australia Council, Create NSW, the Copyright Agency, Creative Victoria, Arts Queensland, Arts Tasmania, City of Sydney and Parramatta City.
