The University of Western Sydney is continuing its support of young, up-and-coming artists with an exhibition of works by students from St Gregory’s College in Campbelltown.

From Thursday 2nd August 2012, the walls of the Margot Hardy Gallery at the UWS Bankstown campus will be adorned with 70 photographic and digital artworks produced by 29 students in years 9-12 at St Gregory’s.

UWS Curator, Ms Monica McMahon, says the St Gregory’s College Photography Exhibition comes to UWS as part of the University’s ‘Campus Art Project’.

“Students from Greater Western Sydney are consistently demonstrating that they have exemplary artistic talents and skills, and are capable of producing works of art that would be at home in any Australian public gallery,” says Ms McMahon.

“The Campus Art Project is the University’s way of encouraging the talent of these students by giving them the opportunity to organise and curate their own exhibition, which can then be enjoyed by the wider community.”

Mr Damien Millar, the Headmaster of St Gregory’s College, says photography and digital media has been embraced by students at St Gregory’s College over the past few years.

“In the photography and digital media courses at St Gregory’s, students are being taught to utilise the digital SLR camera, not just as a means of taking a photo but as a means of creating original works of art,” says Mr Millar.

“Our senior students are constantly producing a high standard of images that demonstrate their understanding of the camera and compositional devices. Some of our graduating students are continuing into the industry as professional photographers, or are furthering their studies in graphic design or digital media courses.”

Ms McMahon says the artworks by the St Gregory’s students are of a very high standard.

“Some of the stand-outs include the works by Abe Elliot and Hamish Gordon – two year 12 students whose rural scenes capture the heart of Australia’s farmlands,” says Ms McMahon.

“Year 11 student John Solomua and year 9 student Dale Shaw have also contributed some extreme close-ups of flowers that display an incredible artistic maturity and are reminiscent of paintings by Georgia O’Keeffe and photography by Robert Mapplethorpe.”

The St Gregory’s College Photography Exhibition at the Margot Hardy Gallery follows an exhibition of works by year 11 and 12 students from Punchbowl Boys’ High School.
