Higher Degrees in Research

The School of Law offers three higher degrees by research:

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The PhD is awarded in recognition of original, independent and successful research meeting international standards in your chosen field. Doctorates are completed within 3 to 4 years full-time candidature, or part-time equivalent, in which you will be guided by an expert panel of supervisors to produce a thesis of approximately 80,000 words.

Entry requirements: A Bachelor's Degree with Honors Class 2(1) or higher.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

The MPhil enhances your research and analytical skills so you can undertake an advanced study of a complex body of knowledge in a specific field. The MPhil is completed within 1 to 2 years full-time candidature, or part-time equivalent, in which you will produce a thesis of approximately 40,000 words.

Entry requirements: A Bachelor's Degree with Honours Class 2 or higher, or equivalent research experience.

Master of Research (MRes)

The MRes is a research training degree that provides a pathway to PhD study and future research career opportunities in academia, government, non-government organisations, and the professions. The first year involves a research training coursework program where you will engage with peers and academics in an interdisciplinary environment. You will complete a number of master's level Law units and 3 research training units. In the second year, you will undertake a supervised research project and produce a thesis of between 20,000 and 25,000 words. The MRes is completed in 2 years full time-candidature.

Entry requirements: A Bachelor's Degree with an Average Admission Mark of at least 65. Your Average Admission Mark is the average of all results awarded in your most recent degree. You do not need Honours to apply.”
