Medicine, community, and culture – Ryan Blake’s journey at Western Sydney University

Ryan Blake, 19, currently lives and studies at Western Sydney University’s Campbelltown campus. Originally from Young in regional NSW, he is enrolled in the Bachelor of Clinical Science/Doctor of Medicine (MD) program.

From the start, Ryan has been focused on pursuing a career in medicine while staying connected to his Indigenous culture and community.

Reflecting on his time at Western so far, Ryan said he has loved the social and academic experiences the University has offered.

“I've really enjoyed the journey so far, especially making so many life-long friends and getting to experience what it’s like to be a doctor,” he said.

Ryan is driven by a desire to help as many people as possible.

“I hope to specialise in a general field like emergency medicine, general practice, or even surgery, and truly make a positive impact in people’s lives.”

“Being part of a community that truly trusts me means I can ensure everyone receives quality healthcare, no matter who they are.”

He also values the supportive environment at Western, particularly the Badanami Centre for Indigenous Education, which has played a pivotal role in his journey.

“I just really want to say how great Western has been at giving me the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing community.  Engaging and sharing culture, navigating through our own stories knowing someone always has your back – it’s such a gift.”

He has also been actively involved in the University community and recently participated for the first time in the Indigenous Students vs Staff Basketball Match.

“I think it’s so important to have an event like this, it really builds off the tight community we have here at Western through the Badanami Centre. There's nothing wrong with a little rivalry between mob.”

“I really believe that through our own competitive nature and friendly banter, we can laugh alongside each other, and that just makes us even closer – more than what we already are.”
