Western Sydney University celebrates ‘Wear it Purple Day’

On Friday, 26 August, Western Sydney University celebrated ‘Wear it Purple Day’ – an annual day of awareness and celebration of young people in the Queer community.

As part of the initiative, students and allies were invited to join a special panel event proudly presented by Rainbow Western, the Queer Collective, the Student Representative Council, and the Ally Network, that explored being queer in the workplace.

Featuring industry representatives with intersecting backgrounds, the panel discussed their experiences of being queer in the workplace, focusing on myth-busting, opportunities, and success stories.

Convened by Associate Professor Brahm Marjadi from Western Sydney University, esteemed panel members included:

  • Terence Huynh, Software Engineer, Economy Growth, Atlassian
  • Jack Byrnes, Social Impact and Engagement Sector, NSW Government Department of Customer Service
  • Türkan Aksoy, NSW Coordinator, Welcoming Cities
  • Eli Ryan, Health Promotion Officer, HIV and Related Programs
  • Matika Little, First Nations and Community Engagement Officer, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, and
  • Aaron Sinclair, Design Manager - eCom, Team and Inclusion, Woolworths Group.

The event also celebrated a new Queer Mentorship program at Western Sydney University that will focus on navigating being queer in the workplace.

The intersectional program will be formally launched in early 2023 to coincide with Sydney World Pride from 17 February to 5 March.

The University is committed to creating an inclusive, safe and respectful place of study and work and highly values the diversity of our staff and students, including our lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual and agender (LGBTQIA+) staff and students.
