Western Sydney University student Aashish Neupane recognised for his outstanding community leadership

Western Sydney University international student Aashish Neupane has been awarded the 2025 Chancellor’s Unsung Hero Award at this year’s ZEST Awards.

Now in its fifteenth year, the 2025 ZEST Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday, 12 June at Accor Stadium. Led by the Western Sydney Community Forum, the ZEST Awards celebrate and honour the vital work of the community sector in supporting Greater Western Sydney.

The Western Sydney University Chancellor’s Unsung Hero Award recognises an outstanding current student who has either established or contributed significantly to community enterprises.

Aashish, currently studying a Bachelor of Computer Science at the University, is a tireless advocate and leader dedicated to improving the lives of international students and a place to call home.

"Western Sydney University has become my second home. As an international student, I came here with hopes and dreams, and Western Sydney University gave me the space to turn them into reality,” said Aashish.

As Deputy Chair of the NSW International Student Representative Committee, he plays a pivotal role in advocating for international students in Western Sydney at the state level. In his role as President of the International Student Association (ISA), he has expanded membership from 300 to over 1,300 students, fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity and cultural exchange.

Under his leadership, initiatives such as the ISA Media Team and Volunteer Team have provided students with hands-on experience in leadership, content creation, and community engagement, enhancing their employability and sense of belonging.

Through his advocacy, mentorship, and leadership, Aashish has helped make Western Sydney a more inclusive, engaged, and supportive community for international students, leaving a lasting impact on the University and beyond.

“Beyond the classroom, I’ve found a vibrant community, countless opportunities and a true sense of belonging. To me ‘Unlimited’ is not just a motto, it is a lived experience that encourages me to go further in every direction,” said Aashish.

This year, the award was presented to Aashish by Western Sydney University Chancellor Professor Jennifer Westacott AC. Also in attendance was Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Western Sydney & External Engagement, Professor Geoff Lee.

Covering the regions of Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Camden, Campbelltown, Canterbury-Bankstown, Cumberland, Fairfield, Hawkesbury, Liverpool, Parramatta, Penrith, The Hills, and Wollondilly, the ZEST Awards are renowned for showcasing the region’s assets, diversity, and innovative community work.
