Construction graduate born and raised in Western Sydney – now helping build it

As a child, Tayla Chalfa would gaze at high-rise and multi-storey buildings intrigued as to how these towering structures were designed, constructed and managed to stand the test of time.

Tayla was inspired by her family, founders of TJK Concreting & Landscapes, to recognise the significant contribution that such developments play in the growth of thriving and vibrant cities. This curiosity and newfound understanding ultimately motivated Tayla to pursue a Bachelor of Construction Management (Honours) degree at Western Sydney University.

Fast forward to today, Tayla has found her passion after graduating at the top of her cohort at Western Sydney University.  She is now participating in the delivery of projects that will serve the community and leave a lasting positive impact on people’s lives. Tayla is working on some of the city’s most iconic and nationally recognised projects as a Graduate Engineer at a global tier 1 construction firm, Multiplex Constructions.

“My role involves supporting the delivery of large-scale and complex construction projects, with my current focus being the Western Sydney International Airport,” Tayla explained.

“I work closely with my team, architects, engineers, project managers, subcontractors and the client (and any other stakeholders) to assist in the coordination and execution of key project tasks and milestones. Together, we collaborate to ensure the development is delivered on time, within budget and to the highest standard.”

“Just knowing that the projects I have and will work on will be used for hundreds of years, shaping communities and serving future generations is truly inspiring,” said Tayla.

“Developing meaningful and long-lasting relationships within the industry and amongst the stakeholders we serve greatly motivates me.”

As Western Sydney continues to grow, the Liverpool local encourages other students in the region to consider a career in construction – a booming industry with huge potential for growth and job opportunities right on their doorstep.

“The construction industry offers a selection of abundant opportunities for professional advancement, and I am highly motivated by the potential for career growth.”

“My advice to prospective students would be to fully immerse yourself within your university experience - education is the most powerful tool that you will carry with you for the rest of your life.”

Tayla shared that studying at Western Sydney University allowed her to not only connect with the academics in her field, but also with industry professionals which aided her career development.

“The University portrays a realistic yet comprehensive image of the construction industry, equipping you with the theoretical and practical knowledge to build a successful career in this multifaceted field.”

“I was exposed to real-life scenarios, challenges and solutions.”

Reflecting on her time at university, Tayla stated the experience had a profound impact on her, both personally and professionally.

“This degree has instilled the technical knowledge necessary to kickstart my career in construction whilst also fostering my ability to think critically, problem solve, lead and manage multiple tasks.”

“It has provided me with understanding, depth and exposure to various aspects of design and construction, including engineering principles, working with heritage buildings, project management, programming and industry standards.”

Consistently strong performance throughout her university journey earned Tayla a place on the Dean’s Merit List and led her to receive the University Medal, along with several prestigious recognitions including the Bechtel Rising Star Award, Intermain Prize for Building and Construction, CIOB Award for Excellence, among others.

“Western Sydney University provides a range of options in terms of course delivery and campus locations, so I was able to balance my academic pursuits while attending to other commitments.”

“Through my educational journey, I have come to understand the value of continuous learning and adaptability in a constantly evolving industry.”
