Maths & Stats Targeted Support here at Western

DF Team

The Mathematics Education Support Hub (MESH) provides all Western students mathematics and statistics support throughout their study here at the university. The MESH Team were recently awarded the 2017 Citations for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning, for their sustained excellence in flexible and responsive numeracy, mathematics and statistics support for students across all levels and disciplines resulting in improved confidence and performance.

Student focussed support is already underway this semester, with the team once again providing individual student support. In addition to online support available on the MESH website, the MESH Library Roving service has recommenced on six campuses from 12th March 2018. All details including times and days are available now on the MESH site (opens in a new window).

During these sessions all undergraduate students from any discipline or unit can come along for free assistance with mathematics, statistics or numeracy issues. Students are encouraged to bring any (non-assessment) questions they are struggling with or lecture/tutorial notes that they didn’t understand. This is a drop-in service, so there is no need to book an appointment, interested students just need to make themselves known to the tutor at the library.

In addition to this direct student support, MESH is currently involved in the development of a number of maths diagnostic tests and follow up support material across several schools. These include Health and Science, SCEM (a new test and support materials for the Programming Fundamentals unit has received a SSAF funding grant), Nursing and Midwifery, and the Graduate Research School (where MESH are developing a new diagnostic test for Higher Degree Research students to identify their maths/stats needs). The team are also helping to develop new alternate entry tests for a variety of disciplines.

Further diagnostic tests and support material can be provided to Unit Coordinators and Schools, contact Leanne Rylands to start the discussion for targeted support developed for your specific requirements.
