Land, Pest and Fire Management

Land management includes control of weedsThe farm has an active management role in reducing the impacts caused by weeds, pest animals and fire.

Eradication of both pest animals and plants may not be possible, it is important to control their spread throughout the farm and into the adjoining bushland.  To achieve this the farm consults with the Biosecurity Officers in Greater Sydney Local Land Services and implements the University’s Invasive/Pest Animal Management Plan and Weed Management Plan.

The farm also takes active measures to prevent bushfire threatening the Hawkesbury campus.  Buffer zones between the paddocks and the bush edges are created through slashing.  These provide fire breaks and allow fire fighters a place of refuge if needed.
