Challenge Minors

What is a Challenge Minor?

A Minor is made up of four subjects that come together to address a theme or problem. A Challenge Minor is transdisciplinary, addressing a theme or problem from multiple disciplines and perspectives. What’s unique about the Challenge Minors is that they are made up of subjects from different Schools across the University. With a Challenge Minor, your learning reaches beyond your discipline, giving you the chance to amplify your learning in new directions. By choosing a Challenge Minor, you are transforming what your degree is and the kind of graduate you will become.

Challenge Minors are created in partnership with students. Our student partners want Challenge Minors that enable you to stand out.

Can I study a Challenge Minor?

To complete a Challenge Minor, you need 40 credit points of elective space free at the appropriate level of the Minor. In some programs

you have to choose a major, minor or concentration as part of your program structure, as well as having the choice to complete an optional major or minor. For example in a Bachelor of Arts you will need to select a major and minor, or a concentration and minor as part of your program structure, however you can also choose to group your elective subjects into additional optional majors or minors. Not all programs have elective space so you will need to check your programme before you enrol for a Challenge Minor.

If you have relevant elective space free in your program, you can add a Challenge Minor as one of your ‘Fields of Study’ (specialisation). In an undergraduate program, a field of study is a group of subjects that make up a major or minor concentration. Read more here.

How do I enrol?

As Challenge Minors are transdisciplinary and consist of subjects from across the University, most of them exist outside of your program. You will therefore need to request adding a Field of Study to your program through Western Now here (student login required).

They are designed to provide opportunities for you to add transdisciplinary breadth and applied depth to your core program, enabling you to become a graduate who is a Future Thinker, Global Citizen, Innovative Entrepreneur and Sustainability Advocate. These elements prepare you for the increasingly uncertain employment landscape, so that you can creatively adapt and shift in the future of work and society.
