c4SMC Colloquium – December 2024

The Centre for Smart Modern Construction (c4SMC) hosted its December Research Colloquium on 2 December 2024, focusing on the Digitalisation of the Built Environment. The highlight of the event was the keynote speech delivered by Assistant Professor Kanchana Ginige from Northumbria University, UK, who discussed "The Future of the Built Environment in the Age of AI – A Conversation on Skills and Job Roles." Her insights provided valuable perspectives on the transformative role of AI in the construction industry.

Professor Srinath Perera, the Centre's Director, provided insights into the ongoing initiatives of the centre. Professor Srinath Perera noted the upcoming Digital Construction (DigiCon) lab, which will be complete with cutting-edge digital equipment. Adding a touch of technological intrigue, a Robot Dog was also present at the colloquium, showcasing the Centre's commitment to innovative construction technologies.

HDR Candidate Sachindra Hewavitharana presented her research on the development of a methodology for trustworthy procurement and management of building services using blockchain technology. This was followed by HDR Candidate Abhishek KC, who explored the concept of a blockchain-based material passport framework aimed at enhancing circularity in built assets.

The colloquium concluded with a vote of thanks and closing remarks by Dr Ali Al-Ashwal, Research Lead at c4SMC. Special thanks go to all the speakers and participants for their valuable contributions, particularly Dr Samudaya Nanayakkara and the Centre’s HDR researchers for organising the event. Iresha Gamage, Project Lead of the WSU CIB Student Chapter, served as the host, ensuring the event ran seamlessly.
