With less than two months before the new Student Management System goes live on 6 October, it is important that all staff are aware of how their day-to-day operations will be changing.
Well over 1,000 staff members had already completed the New SMS Overview Mandatory Training Module by 31 July. We are keeping the New SMS Overview Mandatory Training Module open to enable anyone who wishes to complete this module before they begin the next rollout of training.

Feedback from the Mandatory Training Module
At the end of the Mandatory Training Module, participants were asked to provide their feedback on their understanding of Banner. Of the survey completions, 60 percent of respondents agreed or strongly agreed to the statement that “I feel confident that, by Go-Live in October 2021, I will know how to use the new SMS for my role”. This still leaves 40 percent who are not confident in their understanding or that they will be prepared.
The second part of the survey asked respondents on how they would like to improve their understanding and knowledge of the New SMS. The Practice Adoption Team for the New SMS is developing a number of different pathways to acquire knowledge of the New SMS and we have listened to your feedback to finetune our training approach.
University staff were most in favour of ‘How-to guides and videos in WesternNow’ as the means of acquiring more knowledge about the New SMS. The Practice Adoption Team has noted the preference for staff to have access to how-to guides and videos and we will be making these available in WesternNow in the lead up to Go-Live.
The support for the different methods of receiving training are shown in the graph below.
Training in August and September
Currently, the New SMS Program Adoption Team is working on addressing training requirements across the university. Already, REPS demonstrations have been provided or scheduled to all schools, The College, University Executive, Learning Futures, and Student Services. Planning is now underway on the delivery schedule for training across the other systems in Banner.
Schedule of training
The following sessions will be delivered as online training to accommodate lockdown requirements. This training will be offered as three repeat sessions per topic delivered over several weeks to enable staff to select times and days that suit their timetables. In addition to these sessions, training will be provided on an individual basis to teams on specific topics in Banner.
