The aim of the guiding principles for the Student Management System project is to support the governance of the project, and to place the project within the strategic context of the University’s direction. To help everyone focus on what we are working towards in the project and have a common understanding of how we will approach the implementation of the Banner Student Management System at Western Sydney University.
Distinctively Student-Centred University: | is about having the emphasis for everything we do on improving the student experience, for both attracting our students and keeping them not just because of great learning experiences, but easy to use administrative systems. |
---|
Strong Governance: | will guide decisions as we go through the project – consultation with the senior managers of the SEO and other leaders will be held to finalise and approve decisions. Decisions will be made during workshops and analysis with stakeholders and subject matter experts. |
---|
Adopt and Adapt: | Adopting the new system and adapting our processes are key to smooth implementation and more sustainable maintenance of the system – the project is aiming for the Student Management System to become a single source of truth for all things student administration with elimination or reduction in satellite processes or systems. |
---|
Actively Simplify: | Actively simplifying our processes and technology is a goal for Information Technology and Digital Services, and this flows on to this project. We will challenge our current processes, and aim for process consistency across Schools, Divisions and central administrative areas to achieve efficiency. |
---|
Configure not customise: | we will use the system’s settings and workflows, and not change source code. Changing source code becomes unsustainable and we can end up in similar situation to where we are with Callista where limited staff can run reports or extract information because of the changes that have been made. |

Any device, anywhere, all the time & Enabling Innovation and Efficiency: | Guiding principles were used to support the selection process, and these were also based on the goals of the ITDS Strategic Plan. Any device, anywhere, all the time and enabling innovation and efficiency are focused on cloud based technology to provide agile, mobile, compatible and accessible experiences across all platforms, and using these tools and technologies to enable innovation. |
---|
Move and Improve: | Ultimately, with move and improve, we know that this is not a ‘magic solution’; we will make decisions that may need to be revisited, but we can make decisions that continue moving us forward to the successful implementation of Banner. |
