Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient and holistic system that includes acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, diet, massage and exercise to balance energy disturbances in the body. From a Western perspective, these therapies can also be used to alter brain, nervous, circulatory and hormonal function to assist recovery. Patients from all age groups including children consult Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners about a wide variety of health problems, often as an addition to their general medical care. The most commonly used therapies are acupuncture and herbal medicine.
We provide TCM consultations for general health problems, gastrointestinal and digestive disturbances, respiratory and skin problems, infections and allergies, pregnancy and hormonal/fertility problems for men and women, pain, injury and arthritis as well as support during treatment for cancer.
During your consultation, the student will ask about your current problem, general health both past and present, diet and lifestyle. An examination is conducted based on the TCM theory of energy meridians and on western medical theory. This information will then be discussed with the supervisor to develop a diagnosis and treatment plan.
The therapy plan will be discussed with you so that it is tailored to fit your conditions and lifestyle. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicines are often utilised, and advice about lifestyle, diet and exercise may be provided. Finally, the student will discuss how long it is likely to take for improvement to occur and make a follow up appointment with you.
