Semester Study Abroad

Independent study abroad involves paying tuition fees, and other costs, directly to the host organisation or overseas university. Depending on the program, this option could be expensive. Eligibility will depend on the host organisation or overseas university's requirements.

  • You will be enrolled and paying tuition fees directly to the overseas university or host organisation
  • You will not be enrolled in Western Sydney University's special Exchange 'holding courses' and consequently will not incur any Western Sydney University tuition fees.
  • You will need to take a leave of absence from Western Sydney University during for the period of study.
  • Centrelink payments may be affected by participating in a semester Study Abroad program. Find out more about the requirements.
  • You will not be covered by Western Sydney University's Travel and Insurance policy.

PROCESS

Research and establish your eligibility with the overseas university or provider. If an overseas university, in your research, you should look to find information connected to their 'visiting students program' or '(inbound) study abroad program' (the names of these programs or offices in each university will vary).

Order your latest academic record/transcript. When you submit an application to the overseas provider (below), you will require a formal record of all units and courses undertaken at Western Sydney University.

Submit your application to the overseas provider, as per their processes

Apply for academic credit (non-exchange). This will ensure that what you study abroad will be recognised as part of your Western Sydney University degree when you return.

Wait for an acceptance notification by the overseas institution

It may take a number of weeks or even months for students to hear back from an overseas university, depending on the university and the country to which you are applying. You are advised not to purchase non-refundable airline tickets until this official acceptance is received.
