The Sustainable Food Society aims to bring together the broad arms of Agriculture, Health and Business all in the name of sustainability and food. The Society will engage with students from all different schools and backgrounds, because sustainable food is everyone's business. Through various events, meet-ups, discussions, workshops and other fun activities together we would seek to initiate sustainable changes from the individual level to University level. The society aims that through our activities to engage with industry professionals and create networks that will facilitate career development for students.
Founded by a group of Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security students in 2014 the Sustainable Food Society has already undertaken numerous activities pioneering change and development. Below is a snapshot of what we have experienced and achieved.
Fair Food Fair
A fair held as a part of volunteers week celebrating organisations working in the areas of food security. We had OzHarvest, Hawkesbury community kitchen and Hawkesbury Helping Hands come and host information stalls as well as other University groups.
Riverfarm Project
A project being run by the Office of Sustainability which the society is involved with to revitalise the old Western Sydney University Riverfarm into a food educational hub.
Field trips
Taking the consumers to the producers, students visited numerous farms and research projects to witness Sustainable practises and Food innovation.
Work experience
Experiencing what life on the farm is like, students have undertaken work experience on Western Sydney University very own farm at Hawkesbury assisting staff with their work.
Also in its maiden year the Sustainable Food Society won the Vice-Chancellor's award for excellence in University Sustainability as the student team, in recognition of our achievements.
