2021 Spring Session Learning Opportunities for Sessional Academics

In this challenging environment, we recognise the expertise, dedication and persistence of our Sessional Academic staff. The University is highly supportive of you and is offering currently contracted sessional academic staff a range of paid professional learning opportunities on teaching & learning topics of interest between August and October 22, 2021*.

Note: During Spring Semester, 2021, all currently contracted sessional staff are eligible for payment for up to 3 hours per person upon completion of any of the four learning opportunities listed below. You are free to undertake as many additional professional learning opportunity as you would like, although these will not attract additional payment for completion. We are unable to pay any claims after the expiration of your contract date.

What is on offer?

OPPORTUNITY 1: Sessional academic staff teaching and learning program

This program aims to orient new sessional staff to learning and teaching at Western; assist them in developing active learning environments with their students and support staff with using enquiry-oriented methods to frame individual professional development goals. The program runs twice a year during autumn and spring semesters. It is being offered in August 2021.

OPPORTUNITY 2: Rules for student engagement workshop

This is a 1-hour interactive workshop for Sessional Academic Staff about how to effectively engage students in their online or classroom-based learning environment. This workshop is practical in nature and offers valuable engagement tips and tricks.

OPPORTUNITY 3: Teaching practice online modules

We understand that it is can be difficult to find the time to attend workshops, so we have developed a set of asynchronous online learning modules that may be completed anywhere, anytime. Each module is 3 hours in duration and individual topics cover subject matter including:

  • assessment design
  • student engagement
  • online teaching & learning
  • contemporary learning theories
  • flipped classroom designs
  • constructive curriculum alignment
  • team teaching
  • scaffolding and chunking learning

OPPORTUNITY 4: Spring ConTEACHi event

During week 15 of Spring semester, we are also launching a special ‘ConTEACHi’ online event focussing on career development and teaching practice. This exciting 2 hour event is being planned for late September. Stream 1 (first hour) will focus on career progression while Stream 2 (second hour) will focus on enhancing teaching practice capabilities. Choose from one of four sessions to attend in each stream.
