The Crisis Management Team (CMT) was formed in February 2020 in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Membership of the team consisted a group of highly capable individuals, specialised in their operational streams who assembled very quickly under the most extraordinary circumstances. Almost immediately they developed a rapport and way of working that has delivered outstanding results for the university, it’s staff and students.  Dedication, talent, a deep commitment and focus to the cause and the removal of many institutional impediments has led to much success. At the outbreak of the pandemic, initial work was led by a two-day workshop with Deloitte.  From there the team met daily from 8am and worked tirelessly to manage issues as they arose.

The CMT evolved into the Recovery Management Team (RMT) in August 2020, with a new focus on what the ‘new normal’ for Western might look like post COVID-19, and the creation, updating and facilitation of a University wide Return to Campus plan. The team now acts as the conduit between divisions, schools, academics, professional staff, student support and other supporting services to ensure a consistent, and equitable response, to all issues raised. This has been accomplished largely due to team capacity to lead, mediate, communicate and negotiate with the University community in an extraordinarily cohesive manner. As part of the ongoing RMT remit members continue to provide salient advice and operational support as the University navigates the impacts of the transition back to campus and financial recovery, constantly staying abreast of relevant, timely information as released by Government and NSW Health, coupled with sector updates on “what others are doing”!

Western Sydney University was able to respond to the COVID-19 urgency to transform their assessment practices largely down to the leadership of the Learning Futures Online Assessment Taskforce.  The nominee statement highlights, the historical practice of assessments at Western Sydney University and the ongoing issues of over assessment, using a limited range of assessments types, and not balancing formative and summative within their assessment design to build assessment literacy. There are a range of online assessments types that have been used in higher education to engage learners, inform faculty and students about the effectiveness of teaching and learning strategies, and make decisions about progression and certification. The COVID-19 situation elevated many challenges to a completely different level, and in many cases required a re-thinking about how and why we assess. The Learning Futures Online Assessment Taskforce made sense of this work with teaching teams and overcame the complex challenges for the design and delivery of all examination and alternative forms of online assessment for our students. The success is clearly articulated with the positive results of the new approach. However, the lasting impact was that the taskforce was able to scale down dramatically for the subsequent session, and will not be required next year at all. That is a true a mark of success.
