John MacDonald
John Macdonald is Professor of Primary Health Care (PHC) and Director of the Men's Health Information and Resource Centre (MHIRC) at Western. "I was appointed Professor of PHC at a time when PHC meant health systems incorporated concern with what we call the social determinants of health as well as access to affordable appropriate services," says John.

MHIRC promotes social determinants of health approach for boys and men. "I am privileged to work with Aboriginal men and direct a drop-in centre for men at risk of suicide in Mt Druitt," says John. "I am consultant to the national men's health longitudinal study. MHIRC runs National Men's Health Week in June and has an interesting web presence called Mengage.    

How long have you worked at the University and what's the best thing about working here?
I have worked at the University for 19 years. The best thing is Hawkesbury campus.

Which campus are you based on?
Hawkesbury campus.

What is your favourite place on one of the University's campuses and why?
The avenue up from the main gate because of the trees.

When you're not at work, what will we find you doing?
Collecting my daughter at the station or (early morning) swimming.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A rubbish collector driving a big truck.

What was your first job?
PHC Coordinator in Zambia with various churches.

What has been your greatest success?
Two children: Rohan and Mira.

If you could go to just one country in the world for a vacation, which country would it be and why?
Chile, to walk in the Andes.

What is your favourite book?
The Skull Mantra by Elliot Pattison.

If you could invite anyone to dinner who would it be and why?
Professor Rita Giacaman of Birzeit University in Palestine because of her courage, compassion and intelligence.
