Winner - Dr Catherine Attard, Senior Lecturer, School of Education

Dr Catherine Attard is a multi-award winning educator, who has taught primary mathematics pedagogy in the Master of Teaching (primary) program at UWS since 2008. Catherine uses findings from her research, combined with her experiences as a primary classroom teacher, to combat negative attitudes towards mathematics and promote confidence, competence, and a love of teaching primary mathematics.

Catherine's outstanding contributions to student learning within UWS and beyond are the results of modelling 'best practice' curriculum, pedagogy and assessment practices with knowledge, enthusiasm and passion to students, colleagues and the teaching community. Catherine has led major curriculum renewal informed by up-to-date knowledge of the field, and has developed a range of high-quality teaching resources based on her research in engagement and mobile technology that are being
used in teacher education courses around the country.

Research publications, conference keynote invitations and requests for professional development from the teaching community are evidence of peer recognition of Catherine's work.

Gary has worked at UWS for 24 years and is an exemplary colleague, who strongly demonstrates the positive aspects of talent and dedication so cherished in a member of UWS Staff.

Gary is recognised for his work in developing and putting into operation Casual Employment Authority and Asset Management workbooks for the School of Education to improve efficiency and reduce risk.

Gary has shown generous collegial spirit by sharing the tools with other work units, delivering sustained support to colleagues which has led to efficiencies and improved business processes in UWS operations.

The significant and dedicated contributions of Amy Fairbairn, former UWS employee and student, are acknowledged.

The Blue Mountains Staying on Track Initiative was initiated by the Vice-Chancellor as a result of the devastating fires that destroyed over 200 homes in the lower Blue Mountains and Lithgow areas on October 17, 2013. This initiative guaranteed places at UWS in degrees or pathways courses for HSC candidates impacted by the closure of their school during the exams, and also offered scholarships to those students who lost their homes in the fires.

The promotion and implementation of the initiative was developed in a few days by a dedicated team of staff at UWS. The goals were to offer all interested HSC candidates the opportunity to participate in and succeed at tertiary study and to minimise the administrative burden on the impacted students to prove their eligibility.

The central Blended Learning Team is a small unit with a strong focus on and dedication to delivering the University's strategic priories: technology enhanced learning and blended and fully online learning.

The team coordinates fora, showcases teaching practice, and provides leadership to the School-based Blended Learning Teams. The team's Pick and Match program offers diverse and strategically relevant teaching development in partnership with schools.

The innovative Migration Analysis Toolkit supports staff to successfully migrate and develop UWSOnline and OU Partnership materials. They consult on the design of innovative learning environments that enable synchronous learning in the physical and virtual space.

Excellence in Postgraduate Research, Training and Supervision

Winner - Professor Andrew Shalliker, Professor, Science, School of Science and Health

Professor Andrew Shalliker is highly dedicated to the formal supervision and wider research training of his Higher Degree Research (HDR) students.

Professor Shalliker instils a strong sense of high standards in his HDR students and works closely with them to achieve good research outcomes.

Professor Shalliker has been the advisor for 10 successful PhD completions in 13 years at UWS. These students have all published widely and, on average, completed within 3 years of candidature. The average number of publications per PhD student is 10, with a maximum of 15 being obtained within a 3 year candidature. His students gain outstanding job opportunities beyond UWS, including the youngest faculty member at the University of Amsterdam, the Alfred Deakin Fellow at Deakin University and a representative on the United Nations team responsible for the removal of chemical weapons.

Excellence in University Engagement

Winner (Staff Individual) - Dr Renu Narchal, Senior Lecturer in Psychology, Director Engagement and International, School of Social Sciences and Psychology

Dr Narchal is currently the Director of Engagement and International in the School of Social Sciences and Psychology and has championed University engagement since 2005. She has effectively broadcast migrant settlement issues through teaching, research and advocacy. Her partnership, Service Learning project, Each-One-Assist-One, was acknowledged by government leaders and won the 2013 ZEST Awards in the category 'Exceptional Partnership in a LGA'.

Dr Narchal is currently one of the Chief Investigators on an ARClinkage grant to explore the sexual health of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities. This research promises to break new ground in the areas of health and wellbeing, in a culturally diverse environment in Greater Western Sydney, the heartland of our University.

The Environmental Sciences Technical Team have, since 2008, been instrumental in the development and expansion of a number of increasingly popular UWS Schools Engagement programs, including 'Bandicoots, Bugs and the Bush, Checking the Pulse of the Hawkesbury', Rural Indigenous School Student visits and the Indigenous 'Heartbeat' and 'Pathways To Dreaming' programs.

Working closely with participating UWS academic staff and high school teachers and providing invaluable guidance to participating students, this highly-committed. Technical Team are pivotal to ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality and authentic field experiences that enhance student learning and inspire them towards further studies in environmental health and sciences.

Marija Yelavich is an outstanding embodiment of the values espoused by the University of Western Sydney.

Bringing knowledge to life, Marija's studies combine her belief in the law and her passion for social justice. Academically strong, Marija's dedication to her studies has been recognised in a nomination for the Golden Key International Honour Society and Dean of Law's Merit Award (2014).

Embracing diversity and critical analysis, Marija, among other responsibilities, is also the Chairperson of UWS Amnesty International and the Chief Editor of Dare to Know Publications.

Excellence in University Sustainability

Winner (Student Individual) - Mr Alan Midgley, PhD candidate (Science)

Alan is a volunteer Hawkesbury River Waterkeeper, which is part of an international alliance focused on the health and protection of waterways worldwide. Working alongside UWS and the Hawkesbury Environmental Network, he has dealt with in-field environmental issues, given expert advice, and has educated community members and school students in how to sustain the health of the Hawkesbury-Nepean River with respect to the Indigenous origins of the land.

Alan is also in the final stages of a PhD focused on the sustainability of the Australian Bass, a species commonly targeted by fisherman. He is employing new technologies to trace fish migration through chemical analysis and surveying anglers to gather valuable information to aid in sustainability.

Alan is continuing his sustainability initiative in the workplace, and is taking what he has learned from his studies to the world through environmental consulting.

In less than 12 months, the Renewal of Agriculture Project Team has established a range of new external partnerships, highlighting the importance of sustainable food production and consumption in Greater Western
Sydney. By promoting the view that "students are our partners, not our clients", the team has inspired the student voice of sustainability at UWS.

Delivery of innovative extracurricular activities – particularly high school engagement – has empowered undergraduates to act as proud representatives of UWS and young advocates for sustainable agriculture.

Through this partnership with students, the team has applied sustainability principles (namely succession planning) to ensure the longevity of program outcomes.

This group of undergraduates has demonstrated a zeal for sustainability. They have proudly represented UWS in professional settings, and are leading other students into sustainability action. Their initiatives are promoting the quality of students at UWS.

Winner - Dr Paola Escudero, Senior Lecturer, MARCS Institute

Epitomising first class research output and impact, and in just under 4 years, Dr Escudero has: published 25 journal articles with an exceptional average Impact Factor (2.4); grown research internships at UWS as a pathway to undergraduate and graduate student research; led the creation of four new MARCS units for the Master of Research; infused research activity throughout her undergraduate teaching; and communicated research findings to regional communities.

Recognised internationally, Paola's research has a direct impact on health, education and society – improving communication and wellbeing for immigrants and people with hearing impairment, and understanding the relationship between visual perception and social learning in autism.

Excellence as an Early Career Researcher

Winner - Dr Ajesh George, Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Applied Nursing Research, School of Nursing and Midwifery

Since obtaining his PhD in 2010, Dr George has been leading ground-breaking research on promoting perinatal oral health through collaboration between antenatal care providers and dentists. He has 11 grants (including a NHMRC project grant) totalling $610,000, 32 peer-reviewed publications, 24 conference presentations, and has received numerous awards including an early career research award.

Through industry engagement, he has also developed Australia's first Midwifery-Initiated Oral Health (MIOH) program, which is endorsed nationally by the Australian College of Midwives, included in Victoria's Oral Health Promotion Strategic Plan, promoted by NSW Health for distribution state-wide and incorporated into the UWS midwifery curriculum.

The Community Land Trust Research Team's work is informing and driving perpetually affordable housing based on Community Land Trust (CLT) principles in Australia.

Housing affordability is significantly compromised in many cities and regions, so this work presents a substantial community benefit, offering models sitting between renting and owning that are based in community objectives.

The work informs and benefits community housing organisations, community groups, housing residents and government, and is helping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations to explore appropriate housing options and respond to public policy. It has also established the University as the known centre of CLT expertise.

In the 3.5 years since its inception, the Biomedical Engineering and Neuroscience program in the MARCS Institute has rapidly grown to be a most successful interdisciplinary research team.

The team combines experienced, mid-career, and early-career researchers and postgraduate students from 1 Institute and 3 Schools across the disciplines of Electronics, Signal Processing, Biomedical Engineering, Neuromorphic Engineering, Computational and Theoretical Neuroscience, Physics, and Neurophysiology and collaborates with a number of clinical practitioners.

The team have invented several biomedical devices and have generated approximately half of the protected intellectual property of all of UWS, while publishing more than 100 papers.

Winners (Individual) - Mr Keith Parry, Lecturer, Management, School of Business

Keith is a lecturer within the School of Business working primarily on the Sport Management program within the Management discipline. He has taught at UWS since 2011, bringing an enthusiasm and dynamism to teaching within the School. Keith has a passion for teaching and blended learning and creates innovative, active learning environments for his students. He uses audience response systems, social media, and multimedia tools to create experiences that students look back on as one of the highlights of their University career.

Keith is quick to use student feedback to improve his teaching practice and to further enhance the student learning environment. He has developed a variety of contacts with sports organisations that provide his students with uniquely engaging learning environments.

Invitations to present at a variety of academic forums and to participate in trials of blended learning tools are recognition of the regard in which Keith's teaching practice is held. The dissemination of this teaching practice has proved to be an inspiration for colleagues around UWS and Keith continues to lead the way as one of the University's most transformative educators.

Winners (Individual) - Associate Professor Deirdre Russell-Bowie

Associate Professor, School of Education Deirdre Russell-Bowie is an Associate Professor in Creative Arts Education, with a main focus on Primary Arts Education for generalist teachers. She has researched key issues relating to challenges that pre-service and in-service teachers face in relation to teaching the arts in primary schools both nationally and internationally.

As a result of this research, she has developed a sound, pragmatic approach to training generalist pre-service primary teachers. Her practical methods are linked to a strong theoretical foundation that responds to these emerging needs and issues, and facilitates the effective engagement of students with the subject. Her scholarly research on her teaching and practice has been open to peer review internationally by being published in journals and presented in conference proceedings.

Deirdre successfully brings about a positive change in students' attitudes, knowledge and skills through her passion and enthusiasm for and commitment to the arts being taught effectively in schools. The practical and participatory nature of her lectures and tutorials promotes active learning, and her development and publication of innovative, relevant and valuable resources gives students the confidence and resources they need to be independent, lifelong learners within the creative arts.

Bridge – a structure carrying a path across an obstacle.

Team Bridge-Builders has been building bridges over the last decade, helping ICT students cross obstacles set by the gap between academia and the ICT industry. The nominated team has worked tirelessly in the Professional eXpereince (PX) unit in organising, supervising and preparing students for the demands of the ICT sector.

PX is an industry-based, real-life, capstone-project unit. Projects are sought from external entities, including local government, small, medium and large enterprises, charities, other universities and within UWS. A representative from the organisation acts as the client for the project. Students are grouped and allocated to a project that challenges them at the right-level, enhancing employability-skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, self-initiative, planning and organising and self-learning. Each group is supervised by a School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics (SCEM) academic, who mentors and guides the students throughout the semester.

Team Bridge-Builders organise and supervise the projects and have provided an engaged learning environment where students are supported to develop as ICT professionals in a nurturing academic setting. The PX engagement model coupled with academic supervision creates a win-win situation for students, client organisations and UWS.
