Excellence in Teaching

Winner

Mr Michael Blissenden, Senior Lecturer, School of Law.Michael Blissenden

Michael is recognised for his exemplary contribution to the educational development within the School of Law, as well as across national and international boundaries. Since joining UWS in 2000, Michael has developed two innovative and unique approaches to teaching tax law. Michael’s teaching model and philosophy is premised on student engagement: he uses the concept of ‘story telling’ to explain how the complex case law of tax develops. Michael’s approach enables students to have a deeper understanding and better analysis of case law, and the ability to apply the principles to real-world context. This approach has been well documented and tested. Michael has been asked to present his work at the leading national Australian Law Teachers Association conference, as well as internationally. In 2009, Michael was a recipient of an Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) Citation and was nominated for an ALTC teaching excellence award this year. A central feature of Michael’s teaching, for which he is also recognised, is the facilitation of an engaged educational experience through developing community links with the Australian Taxation Office. He has developed a service learning program where students act pro bono through Tax Help Centres to provide assistance to low income earners who cannot afford a tax professional. This has required students to apply their knowledge from the classroom to a practical setting as a service to the community.

Excellence in Postgraduate Research, Training and Supervision

Winner

Professor Michael Singh, Professor, Centre for Educational ResearchProfessor Michael Singh

Professor Michael Singh is recognised for his development of an internationalised research education program that features an ‘engaged research partnership’ between UWS Centre for Educational Research and NSW Department of Education and Training, and a strategic alliance with the Ningbo Municipal Education Bureau (China). The Research Orientated School Engaged model of Teacher Education (ROSETE) is an innovative, flexible and intellectually challenging program for Chinese Graduates. The program provides supervision and research training for up to 10 new students annually from China, seeking to complete a Master of Education (Honours) degree, while teaching Mandarin in Western Sydney schools. Michael has contributed to the profile and reputation of the University through the international research education program he leads. He has built a culture in which research training, individual supervision and joint interest in the work of all students in the research groups are seamless. Michael has a deep commitment to transnational knowledge exchange, and a strong feature of Michael’s supervision is his insistence on students achieving public recognition of their work during candidacy.

Excellence in University Engagement

Highly Commended

Dr James Arvanitakis, Lecturer, School of Humanities and Languages

James ArvanitakisJames joined UWS five years ago and has worked tirelessly to engage with the community, both at local and national levels and has built relationships to provide community engagement opportunities for UWS students. James’ engagement activities extend across non-government organisations, community and local government groups, as well as UWS programs such as the School Engagement Program. James has worked with Parramatta City Council on their ‘citizenship schools program’ to promote a sense of agency among often-marginalised constituents. James’ research has led to producing two books and a number of academic and non-academic publications and research reports, including the Whitlam Institute’s report on young people and citizenship, which has been used by organisations such as Oxfam Australia, Parramatta City Council and the Inspire Foundation to shape their own engagement strategies.

Associate Professor Basant Maheshwari, Associate Professor, School of Natural Sciences

Basant MaheshwariAssociate Professor Basant Maheshwari led the ‘Water and Irrigation Strategy Enhancement through Regional Partnership in Western Sydney’ project (WISER project). It is one of four major projects of the CRC for Irrigation Futures under the auspices of the System Harmonisation
program. Through the WISER project, Associate Professor Maheshwari has brought together local councils, state and federal government agencies and industry partners to work closely with UWS staff and students. The work of the WISER project has been focused on providing science input to solving practical problems of water cycle management. The UWS engagement through the WISER project has had far-reaching influences on a range of water-dependent businesses and industries in the region, particularly those with agriculture, horticulture, recreation and tourism.

Excellence in Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Winner – Team

UWS Innovation

UWS InnovationWhile UWS Innovation’s main purpose is the management and commercialisation of the University’s intellectual property, the team recently pursued an entrepreneurial initiative to manage the provision of access to the University’s cutting edge research equipment. The Innovation team recognised there was a significant gap in the existing process for accessing UWS-owned state of the art scientific equipment at both internal and external levels. The team established the Equipment Utilisation Program. The team’s creative and innovative approach led to the development of an integrated and novel solution. This program generates economic growth while delivering positive effects for UWS research through enhanced efficiencies and the development of new processes. Benefits have included increased internal usage, market visibility and accessibility, increasing scientific collaboration at all levels and the provision of an important link between UWS and Industry.

Excellence in University Sustainability

Winner – Individual

Mrs Helen Angelakis, Executive Officer, Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Planning and Quality)

Helen AngelakisIn her role as Executive Officer, Helen has delivered a range of additional sustainability projects that have positioned UWS as a leader in sustainability in the greater community. Helen has been the leading figure in assisting the University to develop a sustainability website which has been acknowledged nationally and internationally as best practice. The concept for the ‘Bringing Sustainability to Life’ website was designed entirely by Helen. The website provides a comprehensive source of all social, economic and environmental sustainability initiatives in UWS operations, curricula and research. The website was also the model the Australian Learning Teaching Council (ALTC) used to develop a national stocktake on sustainability in the curriculum. Helen is the project manager for this national initiative. Helen has been the leading figure in a number of other sustainability initiatives including the first sustainability stall at UWS Open Day and coordinating UWS Greening
the Greater West Expo in 2008. Helen has helped UWS to successfully position itself both nationally and internationally in this emerging area of higher education, and has been invited to present on the UWS sustainability strategy and the national stock take of sustainability in the
curriculum at the 2010 Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) conference – attended by delegates from more than 1000 universities and colleges across North America, Europe and Australia.

Hawkesbury Remnants Landcare GroupThe Hawkesbury Remnants Landcare Group is recognised for its dedication, ongoing and valuable work in the conservation and regeneration of critically endangered habitat. UWS Hawkesbury campus has the third largest stand of Cumberland Plain Woodland in Greater Western Sydney. Supervised by a qualified bush regenerator, a core group of UWS student volunteers form the backbone of this official Landcare group. They have been working on the site of Cumberland Plain Remnant bushland on the Hawkesbury campus since the group’s establishment in mid 2009.
