A team of students from the School of Communications Arts were innovative in their use of social media to report live from Powershift, Australia’s first ever national youth summit on climate change.

The media team harnessed the power of the multimedia web including Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Facebook and Blog to report on the Summit, with one particular video featured on YouTube recording over 12,000 views in 8 weeks.

They sourced stories, responded to breaking news and worked as a team to deliver the content across media platforms, uploading images, video, audio and text to the web, sometimes within minutes. The quality and speed of the coverage was such that organisers of the event, the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, placed a feed of new photos and videos from the students’ Flickr and YouTube sites directly to their own.
