Women and men show support for Men’s Health Week

 Men's Health Week

This year’s International Men’s Health Week was the biggest yet, with increased participation across Australia and around the globe. UWS celebrated with a Protein Power Cooking Workshop and Open Day at the Earthcare Centre on the Hawkesbury campus.

Hosted by the UWS Men's Health Information & Resource Centre (MHIRC), the events explored this year’s theme of ‘environMENts', exposing the link between health and food, sustainability, community and environment.

“The idea was to bring together people who are interested in maintaining health through healthy life environments,” says David Thompson from the MHIRC.

“The events held at the Earthcare Centre enabled us to create a view of health being the product of a good environment, providing a space for people to interact with good food, create new social networks and reflect on personal sustainability.”

Men were also offered a headstart on their fitness regimen with a free 5-day pass at uwsconnect fitness centres.

Not to say that women were neglected – this year there was a stronger focus on the role of women in boosting awareness of men’s health and supporting male family members.

Women have a significant influence on the health of their men, David reports. More than 80 per cent of calls to MensLine are from women, and 70 per cent of enquiries to the Riverstone Men’s Shed are made by women.

Men’s Health Week is an annual celebration of the causes and factors behind the state of men's and boys' health in Australia and internationally. The MHIRC is proud to have delivered Men’s Health Week to the Australian community for over ten years.
