Strategic Plan,Strategic Plan

Welcome to WESTERN 2030, Western Sydney University’s bold, exciting, and ambitious strategic plan for the future.

Focusing on our mission of student success, impactful research and stronger communities, our strategy places students at the centre of everything we do.

We are determined that everyone who wants a world-class education can access one. Education unlocks opportunity, and our students will graduate with the Western Edge. They will stand out for their knowledge and critical thinking skills, but also as adaptable, energetic leaders with industry and digital experience.

WESTERN 2030 is built around seven priorities:

  1. Strengthening student success
  2. Putting our people first
  3. Leading Indigenous acceleration
  4. Unlocking global impact
  5. Driving research and innovation
  6. Unleashing Western Sydney
  7. Securing sustainability

Western is the anchor higher education institution of Western Sydney, a region of enormous diversity and potential that is home to one in 10 Australians. It is undergoing a once-in-a-generation economic and social transformation.

Our roadmap ensures as the region changes, we can continue to serve communities in Western Sydney and increasingly around the world. As a public sector institution, we are partners in delivering a stronger, more prosperous community for all.

WESTERN 2030 will allow us to realise our ambition to be the university that Western Sydney needs and deserves.

Changing lives with the Western Edge

Volatility, change, and disruption are the world's new normal as economic, political, and social turmoil relentlessly reshapes global dynamics and economies.
Generative Artificial Intelligence and new technologies will rewrite how we live and work. New trading structures will emerge, new industries will take shape, and sovereign capabilities will become increasingly important in changing global supply chains.

Coinciding with these changes, the nation's centre of economic gravity is shifting to Western Sydney. A concentration of manufacturers, an entrepreneurial spirit, the first new city in a century at Bradfield, and record infrastructure spending, including the $5.3 billion investment in the 24/7, fully digital Western Sydney International Airport, are driving the rise of the west.

Against this backdrop, the role of universities has never been more important; whether its delivering the knowledge, skills and capabilities that our nation needs or driving new industries and strengthening existing ones through world leading research and innovation.

Western Sydney University sits at the centre of this once-in-a-generation transformation. For decades, Western has served as a public institution delivering public good through education, altering the trajectory of students' lives and that of their families and communities.

To continue delivering our mission of student success, impactful research, and stronger communities, Western must evolve.

With a growing population, and industry demanding new and emerging skills, we must keep pace with, and help drive, the region's deepening economic base. Western Sydney University must position itself to leverage the enormous growth and new opportunities underway in our region. We cannot stand still. We must take charge of our future if we are to continue delivering for our students.

This means becoming more resilient and adaptable, and leading in areas of technological and digital advancement.

We must realise our ambition to be a first-choice university, where anyone who wants a world-class education can access one, where it is easy to study, and where students are at the centre of everything we do.

At Western, we are committed to ensuring our students graduate with the Western Edge – the skills, knowledge and attributes to thrive in the new workforces and industries of the future that will call our region home.

As part of this commitment, our students will be the nation's most agile, work-ready, digitally advanced, and values-driven graduates, highly sought after by employers.

Every student will learn digital skills and leadership, and be offered the opportunity for internships, industry or professional placements, and work experience.

At Western, we are committed to ensuring that our research has a positive impact in Australia and overseas. Western will drive new industries and new jobs, advance Western Sydney's economy, be the 'go-to' university for industry, and be internationally relevant.

And critically, we remain committed to the communities we serve. We will do our part to ensure that the people of Western Sydney have an economy and wages growing faster than the national average, their neighbourhoods are dynamic, cohesive, and caring, the region is a magnet for the world's best companies, and builds a global reputation as a centre for innovation.

Western Sydney University is unique. We are truly a university of the people, reflecting the diversity, ambition and values of the communities we represent.
