Find a Supervisor
Master of Research (MRes), Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and other research degree applicants are required to discuss their proposed research project with a suitable research supervisor prior to submitting an application.
You need to discuss your proposed research project with a potential supervisor before submitting your higher degree research (HDR) application. Finding the right supervisor is an important step in a successful research candidature.
How to find the right supervisor:
Potential supervisors will want to know about your research interests and that you can demonstrate a good understanding of your proposed area of research.
To apply for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Philosophy (MPhil), your research proposal should be no longer than 2,000 words.
Visit the how to write a research proposal guide for more information.
To apply for a Master of Research (MRes), you need to write a statement of intent that is no longer than 500 words.
Visit the how to write a statement of intent for more information.
You can keyword search our research profiles and repository to find a potential supervisor in your area of interest. Browse the profiles and publication history to find a researcher in your discipline and then review their network to find other researchers in that area.
If you already have a connection with a Western Sydney researcher (such as a tutor or lecturer from previous study), you could try asking them to connect you with a colleague in your area of interest.
When you think you have found the right supervisor, you can send an email to introduce yourself, describe your qualifications and experience, outline your area of interest, and provide a short explanation about why you want to work with them on a research project.
To make yourself stand out, you should consider referencing one of the papers or research outputs that caught your attention when browsing their research profile.
If you are finding it difficult to identify a supervisor but would still like to apply at Western, you can contact the Director HDR in a relevant School or Institute. They may be able to recommend a potential supervisor or research project.
