As a science graduate in zoology, you can look forward to career opportunities in:
- Animal nutrition
- Reproduction technology, genetics, behaviour and health
- Product development and physiology
- Scientific officer
- Science communicator
- Research scientist (with further study)
As a zoologist you will examine the anatomy, physiology and biochemistry of animals and other living organisms to better understand how they function, interact with each other and their environment.
Employed as consultants or in industry, the role can involve testing nutritional value of foods, helping to maximise productivity without compromising the health of animals, formulating feed mixes, and testing new products.
Animal Genetics Specialist
This job involves being responsible for developing breeding programs for production animals. Working mainly in a laboratory setting, this career looks to improve inheritable trails and population genetics.
Animal behaviourists work with zoos, welfare organisations, government departments and the community including the tourism industry. They try to understand and explain animals behaviour and the welfare implications of their housing and environment.
With further study (Honours, Masters (Hon) or a PhD) you can also become a research scientist working across a diverse variety of areas employed by universities and research institutes. Working in the field or the laboratory bench, the scope of a research zoologist is vast.
