Faculty of Engineering,
Computing and Science
The Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science (ECS) is a bold new Faculty at Western Sydney University, created to bring together Engineering, Built Environment and Design, Science, and Computing, into one integrated powerhouse of teaching, research, and innovation.
Our mission is clear; to be the engine of Western Sydney’s prosperity, educating diverse, work-ready graduates and delivering mission-driven research and partnerships that turn ideas into impact for people and planet.
Western Sydney is one of Australia’s most dynamic regions. It is home to nearly 3 million people, a new international airport, and the emerging high-tech city of Bradfield. No region in Australia has greater potential. ECS sits at the heart of this transformation, with state-of-the-art facilities and strong partnerships with industry, government, and communities.
Guided by Western 2030, our strategy focuses on:
- Student Success – delivering personalised, flexible, industry-connected education.
- Research & Innovation – driving solutions in areas which include advanced manufacturing, infrastructure, sustainability, agriculture, and digital technologies.
- Indigenous Leadership – embedding Indigenous knowledges and building pathways for Indigenous student and staff success.
- Global Engagement – expanding transnational education through campuses in Indonesia and India.
- Sustainability – leading the sector as Australia’s first climate- and nature-positive university.
ECS already has more than 9,400 students and 400 staff across its Schools. We are building on strong foundations but also reimagining what an engineering, computing and science faculty can be; collaborative, industry-facing, and globally connected. At ECS, we aspire to be a faculty without boundaries: interdisciplinary, inclusive, and innovative.

Professional Staff
Executive Dean
Distinguished Professor Brian Falzon
Brian brings to this new role a track record of visionary and strategic senior leadership experience gained at top-tier Australian and United Kingdom academic institutions. He has worked extensively at the nexus of academia, industry and government, consistently supporting place-based innovation, leading transformative initiatives, and facilitating large-scale collaborations in Europe and Australia.
He is a world-leading researcher in the field of advanced composite materials and aerospace structures and is in the top one per cent of cited researchers in the field of Material Science. He has been honoured with the title of ‘Distinguished Professor’ at both RMIT University and Western Sydney University, reflecting his reputation for impactful research which has benefited major industry primes such as Boeing, Airbus and QinetiQ, and organisations such as the UK’s Ministry of Defence, Australia’s Department of Defence, and NASA.
Brian envisions ECS as Western’s innovation catalyst. A place where engineering, science and data disciplines converge to solve regional and global challenges. Under his leadership, ECS will become the “engine room” for advanced manufacturing, digital technologies and sustainable agri-food and infrastructure systems.
He aims to embed industry-integrated learning across programs, ensuring graduates leave with technical depth, entrepreneurial agility and the Western Edge that employers value. By expanding initiatives such as the ASPIRE pathway for Indigenous students, he will also cement equity, cultural inclusion and Indigenous knowledges at the heart of the ECS experience.
Equally, Brian’s vision is for ECS to operate as a seamless part of a “One University” ecosystem. He plans to leverage Western’s campuses in Surabaya and the forthcoming Indian campus to build joint degrees, promote co-supervised PhDs and global design studios, positioning ECS students and staff as active contributors to a connected world. ECS will be an agile Faculty, able to grow research income and outcomes, accelerate commercialisation and deliver measurable impact for Western Sydney and beyond.
