EKN Professional Learning Workshops

Since 2007, EKN has been offering a wide range of high-quality professional learning opportunities to assist teachers in adapting to the challenges they face in improving student learning, engagement and wellbeing. We offer a range of different types of professional learning events including:

• Webinars
• Workshops
• Courses
• Conferences and forums
• Tailored professional learning for whole schools and early childhood settings
• Support for teachers and schools engaging in action research

Several courses are delivered fully online. We also conduct no cost, professional learning forums throughout the year. All of our events focus on new and emerging practices and theories to promote innovation in teaching practice. Our on campus and online sessions are designed to bring teachers together from across schools and systems and provide them with opportunities to network and learn about current initiatives in education.

Place-based pedagogy is a valuable learning approach in education. Through place-based pedagogy (PBP), children experience first-hand connections to the natural world, sustainability education, a sense of community and belonging, and develop their identity.

Using practical and relevant examples the presenters in this series will provide examples of how place can be reasonably aligned with curriculum. The series will focus on using place as a teaching tool to work alongside the curriculum to provide support for effective teaching rather than an additional teacher demand.

The learning garnished from the series will assist teachers to work toward connecting children in a meaningful way to the place in which their learning occurs.

Exploring linguistic repertoires with young people in mainstream classrooms - 2023

In this presentation, Associate Professor Jacqueline D’warte will share research that engaged young people and their teachers in Western Sydney classrooms, in being researchers of themselves, studying the ways they were reading writing, talking listening and viewing in one or more languages inside and outside of school as part of regular classroom practice. She will explore the possibilities for extending all young peoples’ plurilingual repertoires, advancing multimodal, multilingual, knowledge and skill along with strategies and activities generated from this ongoing work, with a particular focus on language mapping (D’warte, 2014) a methodological and pedagogical strategy that requires participants to make a visual representation of their linguistic worlds.
