Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education at Western

This degree will extend your personal literacy and numeracy skills and develop your cultural perspective as it relates to schools and communities. It provides a firm foundation for the curriculum studies subjects, in which you will examine the curriculum content for primary schools.

The program is offered at the Bankstown campus in block mode. Block mode is designed to afford students the capacity to remain in their communities to fulfil their family, community, career, cultural and social responsibilities.

To study a block mode program you are required to attend four residential schools per year, each lasting one week, whether online or face to face. Travel, accommodation and meal costs to attend the workshops are funded by Abstudy for approved students. Students may also be eligible for Tutoring for Success (TFS) assistance. Professional experience is undertaken in schools in home communities and in Sydney.

A literacy and numeracy test is required prior to the school placement for Professional Experience 4: Teaching in Country.

Professional accreditation

Our graduates are qualified to teach Kindergarten to Year 6 (K-6) in government and non-government primary schools in Australia, and most other countries. This program has been professionally accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority. Our graduates will meet the Australian Professional Standards for Graduate Teachers.
