Mathematics and Data Science

Discipline Lead | Laurence Park

Mathematics and Data Science at Western Sydney University is an integrated discipline that excels both in its own research and in collaboration. The discipline teaches foundations of mathematics and data science throughout the University, and also provides depth in knowledge of theory and practice to students within the discipline.

Western performs research above world standard in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics (as assessed by Excellence in Research for Australia), and conducts leading research in fundamental parts of Data Science. It has particular strengths in algebra, control theory, mathematical biology, machine learning and signal processing. This breadth is a feature of research within the Centre for Research in Mathematics and Data Science which tries to break discipline boundaries, seeing its research as a continuum between theory and application. This continuum is exemplified in the data science training provided through Bachelors and Masters degrees, which deliver theoretical understanding with very practical experience.
