Misconduct is any conduct that undermines the academic environment or the principles of honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility expected from all members of the Western Sydney University community.
Student misconduct is managed under the Student Misconduct Policy by implementing the Student Misconduct Procedure.
Misconduct falls into one of the following areas:
Types of Misconduct
General misconduct is behaviour that goes against the University’s expected standards, set out in the Student Code of Conduct. This includes putting someone’s health, safety, or wellbeing at risk, disrupting University’s activities or services, or stopping others from using University spaces.
Academic misconduct is when you act in a way that is dishonest or intentionally deceptive during your study. This includes behaviour that may affect the fairness of exams or assessments or harms the University’s reputation.
Research misconduct is not following the processes for undertaking research honestly and properly, as set out in the Responsible Conduct of Research Policy. This includes things like making up data or acting unethically in research.
Sexual offences include any sexual behaviour that is inappropriate, unwanted, or without consent such as unwanted physical contact.
Gender-based Violence is harmful behaviour directed at someone because of their gender, such as verbal abuse or harassment.
At Western, we believe everyone should be respected. We want to end sexual assault and harassment or other forms of gender-based violence and are committed to safer communities.

The misconduct process
The University responds to misconduct in a way that is safe, fair, respectful, and focussed on student wellbeing, Investigations undertaken fairly and consistently, with clear communication and decisions based on evidence.
If the University believes a student not followed relevant processes, it will investigate under the Student Misconduct Policy and follow the steps in the Student Misconduct Procedure.
If misconduct is proven, the outcome can involve a sanction ranging from losing marks or failing a subject to suspension or exclusion, depending on how serious the behaviour is assessed. More details on sanctions are available in the Student Misconduct Procedure.
