Biography

Prof Carlos Zubaran Jr is the medical director of Sunnyside Clinic in Sydney, with branches in the Upper North Shore and Northern Beaches. He holds a conjoint professorial appointment with the School of Medicine at Western Sydney University.
Professor Zubaran graduated at UFRGS Faculty of Medicine, a centenarian institution in Southern Brazil. After obtaining his specialty in Psychiatry and a PhD in Biological Sciences, he completed research programs at the Institute of Psychiatry and Maudsley Hospital in London (Behavioural Pharmacology), as well as postdoctoral programs at Columbia University and New York State Psychiatric Institute (Substance Use) and at the International Center for Mental Health, at Elmhurst Hospital (Cultural Psychiatry) in New York. Professor Zubaran completed a research sabbatical term at the Epidemiology and Prevention Research Group (EPRG), Department of Psychiatry at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. Prof Zubaran also obtained a master’s degree in health management from the University of New South Wales.

Qualifications & Recognition

Professor Zubaran is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and a member of its Faculty of Addiction Psychiatry and Faculty of Adult Psychiatry. He has authored more than 100 publications including scientific manuscripts, research abstracts and book chapters.

Professor Zubaran was the recipient of the World Psychiatric Association International Fellowship Award (1996), the US National Institute on Drug Abuse Distinguished International Scientist Award (2009), and the Eric Roger Wroclawski Award (2013). In 2014 Professor Zubaran delivered the Elysio de Moura Invitational Oration at Coimbra University, Portugal.
