Self Portrait

Self Portrait by Jason Wing

Self Portrait (2024) by Jason Wing

Spray paint and gold leaf on canvas, 122cm x 91.5cm

Collector: Simon Chan

Self Portrait by Jason Wing, an artist with Chinese, Aboriginal and Scottish heritage, has never been exhibited previously as it is an earlier painting by Jason that I requested him to restore.

The painting has Jason’s signature Spirit Figure in colours of the Aboriginal flag - yellow for the Spirit Figure and red and black for the earth and sky in the background. The painting had some minor scratch marks on it and Jason decided that beyond just touching up and restoring the painting, he would turn it into a new painting by adding gold leaf to the Spirit Figure and creating a more lively background with red, gold, grey and white drops of paint added over the top of the red and black background. The ‘auspicious clouds’ which represent the heavens as well as 'good luck', similar to those in Jason’s public art, Between Two Worlds, commissioned by City of Sydney at Kimber Lane at Haymarket, are also visible in the dark black sky in this painting.

The new title for this painting is Self Portrait as Jason pictures himself navigating between two worlds in his journey in life.
